Sounds like you probably have a USB connector problem.
Rather than letting the pda gather dust you can always apply any updates/additions using a card reader.

The Mio ebackup, and sprite should both back up everything in the Mio memory to the storage card.
I would also suggest backing up the storage card to your PC either using active sync, or with a card ...

The Mio usually comes with MIo's e-backup. You could backup using this once in a while.
