Interesting, since my last post (when I disabled location permission for AA itself) I've left the permissions the same, and STA remained accurate - with no other impact (as far as I can tell).

I'll install STA onto another phone and see how that reacts..

I'll check mine later.

Until you posted I've never paid much attention as my phone is in a cradle down by the gearstick so not in view unless I specifically check.

As I said, I use the Speedo display but I'll make a point of periodically checking it.

So after some more testing, it definitely seems to be affected by location permissions for AA..

Disable location permission for AA, and STA displays speed fine. Re-enable AA location permission and STA reverts to incorrect/alternating. I've tried deleting data for AA (which also resets permissions), but no difference.

As well as Torque I also have overlays which has an option to display a speedometer overlay; this and Torque both continue showing correct speed while connected to AA (with location permission enabled, while STA is showing incorrect speed).
I did also recheck STA while going through an average speed zone, and correct speed is calculated/displayed (even while the overlay is showing an incorrect/random speed).

Does this help/any other suggestions?

So I've tried with various apps (Waze, Google maps) location disabled, and hadn't made any difference.
Last thing I've just tried is disabling location permission from AA itself, and speed seemed more normal - will do some more testing though (as occasionally speed would be correct/accurate so may be red herring).
To be continued..

Only when connected to AA does sound strange.

I don't use the overlay option as I have STA on the full screen Speedo display.

I wonder if your phone is incapable of feeding 2 apps with accurate speed data ?

Maybe a delay ?

But only when connected to AA? Also STA does seem to know/show the true/actual speed in average camera zone (even while the overlay is showing random speeds)?

Then, if possible disable any other GPS apps for testing.
OK, I've deleted data/cache, uninstalled/reinstalled, will test again next time I go for a spin..

What speed does it show? Does it show about 18-20 when it's meant to be 30? I'm wondering if there's a bug where it assumes kmh when connected to Android Auto and then converts it to mph - i.e. it's reading '30' cos you're doing 30mph but assumes that's kmh, but you have the app set to mph so it then re-converts it to 18mph?
It seems so show either a single speed, or alternate between 2 - if it's been disconnected and got a valid speed reading it may stick with this, otherwise the speed shown seem pretty random. I've taken a few screenshots with Torque showing speed (OBD & GPS) showing it matching when disconnected but stuck otherwise.. Confused

Very Happy
Any way to get debug logs or similar (to get a better idea what's going on) Question

Ok been out for a spin, confirmed it's definitely on Play Services, changed to Google Maps on AA but no difference..

Yes, it's mounted to cental air vent; if I open Torque and add a display for GPS speed it shows expected values (and confirms GPS lock in Torque)..

Any other suggestions?

Not a lot of help but I have a similar setup.

The location provider should be Play Services. The only difference I have is I link AA to Google Maps.

Does the phone have a good view of the sky ?

I've seen posts where the phone sits on a tray behind the gearstick and that gives the GPS receiver a headache.

PostPosted: Sun May 07, 2023 5:08 pm    Post subject: Speed display incorrect when connected to Android Auto?

I've noticed that the speed displayed on the speedometer overlay is incorrect when connected to Android Auto (often switching between 2 incorrect values). If I disconnect from Android Auto and wait a few seconds the correct speed appears, however when reconnecting an invalid speed appears again.
The app does seem to know actual speed as it shows a correct average speed while driving through an average speed camera zone.
I've tried both default and Google Play as location provider, and no difference.
If relevant - I'm using a Oneplus 8T with Android 13, and when connected to Android Auto Waze opens by default.

Any thoughts/suggestions gratefully received! Thumbs Up
