Thousands of speeding drivers have been caught by speed cameras on the Sheppey Crossing - the bridge that connects the Isle of Sheppey to the mainland of Kent.

The average speed cameras have been live since May last year.

It seems that motorists are more in hurry to get onto the island than leave it, with 1,139 drivers
caught speeding Sheppey bound, compared to 867 leaving it.

However, overall the scheme has been deemed a success.

A spokesman for the Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership commented: "Average speed cameras result in high levels of compliance. Based on last year’s traffic flow data, in excess of 10 million vehicles use this crossing every year, and such low offence numbers, coupled with a good crash record, clearly shows the success of this scheme."
