CES 2009: Eclipse and TomTom announce the in-dash AVN4430 navigation and multimedia system

Not exactly a well kept secret, but Eclipse and TomTom finally announced the AVN4430 at CES this week. This is a collaboration between TomTom and Fujitsu to create a multimedia in-dash device with a double DIN format. This allows the integration of a wide screen TomTom device (running the latest version 8 software) directly into the audio system in the car. The Navigation device is removable and can be installed in a different car using a travel kit. The Fujitsu multimedia device handles all the audio output from the TomTom or the connected devices (iPOD). It can also feed a video signal to the TomTom. This is used for interaction with the system and also shows the images from a reversing camera. Our video presents an interview with Wolfgang TomTom's automotive specialist. Lutz questions Wolfgang about the system and the TomTom integration into the dashboard.

Will only offer GPRS traffic via your cell-phone data plan. Hopefully TomTom will be a bit more supportive of this Eclipse model. The original model is not longer supported and still stuck at Navcore 6.x with no map updates since 2006.

I'm told that TomTom are manufacturing the entire unit, this is a new move for TomTom. So as they are the manufacturers one would hope they will provide full support even if it is under the Fujitsu-Eclipse banner.

Darren, that would be good news indeed for the owners of the new Eclipse device. The older model, added aftermarket in the Toyotas, has received a lot of complaints from users, mostly due to lack of new maps and updates.

What I mean is.... will they be proving over the air / Live services in the UK unit either via an in built SIM or mobile phone or will it just be FM TMC ?

I only ask as they seem to be pushing the Live stuff over here and in my experince FM TMC is next to usless in areas of the contry like mine.

May be some one can have a word ;)

BTW, I seem to recall TT signing up Renault for navigation. Could this be intended for them?

The interview with Wolfgang mentions Renault IIRC?

No news as yet as to if/when it is coming to these shores but the unit as it currently stands has no built in LIVE capability.
