From my nuvi, I saved 61.6Mb by deleting the following files, all in the Garmin folder.
Help folder, deleted everything but British_English (other languages not required).

Like most crowd-sourced projects, OSM is dependent on the users updating the maps. it's not that hard to do, really, but does take a little time to do it right.
