ALK, developers of CoPilot, have partnered with road safety charity Brake to promote safer driving.

The use of satnav has now become ubiquitous but as its usage has risen, it has been accompanied by accidents that were a result of misuse, drivers distracted by their satnav, drivers who lost concentration whilst entering addresses etc etc. And sadly, some of these accidents resulted in loss of life. We've all been guilty of messing with our satnav when we should be concentrating on the road ahead and who hasn't seen a driver whose satnav was planted in the middle of their windscreens?

So I think ALK should be applauded for taking a stance on road safety here. Their app already has a number of safety related features including 'Motion Lock', which prevents fiddling with the display when moving, and a 'Directions Only' option which gives only the most important navigation data.

Richard Coteau of Brake said, "Having a navigation campaign partner who cares about driver distraction and road safety gives us great insight into sat navs, such as CoPilot, and their safety, and together we are looking forward to raise awareness around the driver distraction risks of inappropriate use of technology when in car."

David Quin of ALK and Richard discuss satnavs and safety in this YouTube video.
