Despite every fixed speed camera in Northamptonshire being out of action since April 2011, more than 24,500 motorists were recorded by police breaking the speed limit between January 1 and December 5 last year.

Following a freedom of information request, it has been reported that police officers in mobile camera vans recorded a daily average of 72.4 offences - an increase from 66.7 in 2012 and 57.7 in 2011 (which included static speed camera figures up to when they were switched off in April that year).

It wasn't stated whether van patrols, which are rotated around nearly 150 locations across the county, increased over this time or remained the same.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police commented, "It’s not a free-for-all – we don’t just pitch up wherever we like. There’s a lot of science. It’s always supported with some sort of data or evidence."
