Speed Cameras on the march - Fight or flee?

pocketgpsworld.com Until quite recently the US was devoid of fixed speed cameras. Instead, many states opted to deploy red-light camera technology as a first step with cameras installed in nearly 400 communities now. As always this appears to be the thin end of the wedge with many states now moving to approve the use of photo based speed enforcement including New York State, Maryland, Tennessee and California.

Many states in the US contract their red-light enforcement to private companies who run the systems and issue tickets. These companies receive commission for every ticket issued and the situation is becoming very contentious given the clear conflict of interest. Although we suffer a similar system in the UK where parking enforcement is concerned, how happy would we be if our speeding tickets were issued by a private company?

So my question to all of you is this, are we too trusting of the technology and systems employed here? When we get a ticket do we believe we have been 'caught fair and square' or should we be questioning the technology, the accuracy of the speed measurement and in some cases the legality of the alleged offence?
