News: Solar Flare Heading For Earth - GPS May Be Affected

pocketgpsworld.com
A massive coronal mass ejection (CME) last night caused a solar flare which is now heading towards Earth at 4 million miles per hour. This latest activity follows a solar flare on Sunday which saw Aurora (Northern Lights) visible in parts of the UK as far south As Newcastle.

This CME is the largest recorded since 2005 and its high speed means we can expect it to reach Earth throughout Wednesday. Whilst sights such as the aurora are likely to be visible once again, possibly even further south than Sunday, there is growing concern that the CME could affect GPS and other communications satellites that orbit at high, Northern latitudes.

This latest flare has been rated an S3 event, on a scale of 1 to 5 and it is sufficiently strong for flights over the North pole to be rerouted.
