Not much of an update I'm afraid. I followed the link from their e.mail to me and the only option was to return it using their on-line Returns procedure. It cost me £63 for the privilege

What is concerning is that others have also returned their units in the past and, as mentioned earlier in this thread, there is a suspicion that the weak link may be the power connector within the device. If this is an inherent defect, it's a sure money-maker for Garmin.

The replacement unit was returned in just under a week so looks like the refurbished units are stacked, ready to ship in an instant. I will be collecting the package from the sorting office later and if there is anything in it to indicate what was wrong I will post it here, but I don't expect to get an explanation.

EDIT: The plain box just contained the refurbished unit with no documentation.

I had similar problem with my standby 1690 (which I lend to family and friends) about a year ago, which refused to boot up further than the splash screen.

After getting NO help from Garmin, in fact I seem to remember that I never got a reply - probably because the unit was no longer supported.

Thinking that the battery had given up, I ordered and replaced it myself but no change.

Finally I sent it to the following company:

Their website has instructions on how to get a quote based on your problem and how to send your unit to them.

As far as I remember the cost for my repair was under £50.

It was returned in full working order with the latest maps and software for the unit, after about a week.
They do warn that you will lose any personal data on the unit.

Yes - OK, it probably wasn't really cost effective, but at least I got a second working unit.

A thought.......

It seems that the usb socket could be the culprit ?

Could it be that the installation was a windscreen mount with the cable just hanging loose on its way to the power socket - then at some point the cable gets a 'tug' and dislodges the socket a bit ?

My cable, for example, is trapped between the dash and windscreen trim so there is zero pressure on the socket.
