As previously on my 2340 the latest update for my 2589 exceeds the capacity of the device memory despite having removing most of the unwanted voices etc files. I have used an SD card to load the update but would prefer just to have the PGPSW French cameras on a card so it can be removed 'tout de suite' if stopped.

As I really don't need the whole of Europe mapping is it possible to remove unwanted countries from the update to reduce the size to fit the device memory?

Incidently, with the 2340 the later larger updates split Europe in two parts to get the lack of memory problem. The drawback was that the UK was lumped in with northern Europe and not combined with France, Spain and Portugal which is probably the combination most Brits would choose.

Yes but not easily and without penalties. I just run the map and French cams on the card.

Thank you. I suspected as much. I note that Garmin sell various combinations of countries on SD card including Benelux and France. Could this replace the 'whole of Europe' (CN Europe?) that came with the 2589? Not that I wish to spend £35 to do so but should I cock up an update at any time in the future!!!!

Why do they design sat navs with so little spare capacity that updates become too large for the internal memory?

Rhetorical question ..... I know why.

The more recent drive models have ample space. At least mine does.

I had to change my 2597 from Europe to UK&I and contrary to the warnings I've not noticed any reduction or loss of functionality.

I actually wonder if working with a smaller area/database makes it work better.

Being as I have no intention of driving on the wrong side of the road I don't need full EU maps.

One of last years updates, or the year before was too large so it offered the option to switch.

I think the latest ploy is to fill the device with a temp text file to fill it up then go for a map update. It may decide you haven't got enough room and offer alternative maps.

I had this on my update to 2018.10 on the 2599. So I chose UK & ROI. As it said it would lose Voice Command, I then bought a micro SD card but after fitting it and going for the update, it put all Europe onto the 2599, with nothing on the card. I guess the original full Europe was too big to allow the updated full Europe to be installed in parallel (I guess it puts the new map on before it updates the old, so you're never left with no map if it fails.)

I was warned about losing voice control on my 2597, but being as it was a spare unit I went ahead anyway and ....... voice control works just fine.

My 2599 took 2018.01 onboard OK, probably because I've deleted all the foreign language files.

That's odd. When I updated my 2589 with 2018.10 there was no alternative to choose it was just Europe which it then stated was too large so I used an SD card. The update is split more or less 50/50 between card and internal memory. So how does an update work? Does it replace the existing mapping completely or just replace those parts that need updating? Surely it cannot load the update then delete the original as appears to be suggested (in parallel).
I had already stripped everything that I didn't use such as voices etc so had the maximum internal capacity possible. I think I had 800+KB free of 7.4GB memory with a 7.8GB update.
Wonder if it's worth removing the card and trying another go at 2018.10?

Of course they may have changed how it works since I did mine but there was a dropdown listing Europe or UK&I.

I know if full Europe fits they don't give the option anymore. Have a look at the 'reinstall' button with the card out.

Maybe GE needs to be told about Brexit Very Happy

'Click' Idea

That'll be why Basecamp now has 2 x 2018.01 maps showing on the device internal storage when connected.

I've just updated my 2340 and, again, it's too large for the internal memory so there is a choice of all Europe or UK & Ireland. I selected the latter and actually get UK & Ireland plus a little of Northern France. As I don't use the 2340 for continental driving that suits me.

CN Europe NTU 2018.10 ALL South
CN Europe NTU 2018.10 ALL North

Weird..................................... Rolling Eyes

Edit: for anyone interested

When split it showed
Device - 1.43GB free of 7.02GB - card 12.3GB free of 14.4GB
Now it's all on device it shows 108MB free of 7.02GB
