I'll provide a further update later today as to how the new unit behaves compared with the other one. I'll initially just try connecting without a satellite fix to see if I can actually get Garmin Express to recognise it. If it does, I won't do anything else except disconnect it and then switch it off and back on again to see if it has remembered my country. If it hasn't, I'll take it outside, get a satellite fix and then repeat the initial set up.

OK thanks. I'll try that and I'll use my spare USB 3 port as that should provide more power.
On my 2699 it makes no difference to the charge current. It is about 260mA from either USB2 or USB3 port. The ports will only deliver the amount of current required by the device, but USB2 is limited to 500mA, whilst USB3 is 900mA. But again, either will only provide the current required by the device (unless it tries to draw more than 500mA from a USB2). But it's worth a try.

Your tests above should give us a good idea about sussamb's theory.

OK - I've got the new device and it exhibited almost identical behaviour to the first one, with the exception that no excessive power demand warnings appeared on my PC when I plugged in the unit.

After trying various things without success, I went to Device Manager and I could see that the Garmin was listed, but it had a little orange triangle by it. When I right-clicked on it and chose properties, there was a message saying that Windows couldn't connect to the device due to a misconfigured setting in the registry.

I've just called Garmin support and a very helpful lady called Claire asked me a couple of questions and then confidently said, "That's easy, I can fix that." She then sent me an e-mail with instructions about how to install the correct driver. Once I had done that, Garmin Express immediately launched and after clicking "Add", it found my device straight away. It's really quite simple when you know how, but since I didn't, it was anything but simple. Why don't they just include this information in their setup guides - it would save a lot of time and frustration.

Now on to my next point. There are 9 updates waiting for my device, but I'd like to back everything up first. Can anyone tell me how to do that on a Windows 10 PC?

Yes, but I thought that you would know how to do that.

No, that's why I'm asking. It's been a while since I've owned a Garmin. I don't want to update anything until I've backed up the device. Then I'll add the PGPSW speed cameras which I've just re-subscribed to and if that goes well, I'll let Garmin apply the updates.

Just drag/drop all the files from your Drive into somewhere on your PC. However you'll need to 'unhide' the .system folder. The .system folder is a hidden folder using the default Folder View Options in Windows. In order to see the .system folder on your Nuvi you need to make Folder View Option changes in Windows as follows:

Windows 8 and 10:

1) Open the Control Panel. (Right click on the Windows square in the bottom left of your computer screen. Select Control Panel and click on it.)
2) Inside Control Panel, click on "Appearance and Personalization", then "Folder Options" or “File Explorer Options". This will open the File Explorer Options window.
3) Inside the File Explorer Options window, click on the "view" tab.

Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
Remove check mark for “Hide Empty Drives”
Remove check mark for “Hide protected operating system files” (Recommended)”

Windows 7:
1) Open Windows Explorer and select Organise, Folder and Search Options
2) Click the View tab.
3) Uncheck ‘Hide protected operating system files.
4) Check ‘Show hidden files, folders and drives’

In addition, since your Drive's storage is protected by using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) by default you may also need to change your device to the more common Mass Storage mode in order for the .system folder to be visible in Windows. You can make this change by following these procedures:

1. Bring up the volume screen on the GPS.

2. On the upper right hand corner. Press your finger on screen and hold for appx 10 seconds.

3. Shortly you will see the developers screen.

4. Find MTP Settings and touch it (note on some models it’s under Configuration and Settings).

5. It will show 3 selections. MTP Auto Detect, Mass Storage and Mass Storage Single Session.

6. Touch Mass Storage as your selection.

7. Select save.

Incidentally setting your device to mass storage will deal with the Win10 versus mtp issue that no doubt was the issue sorted by your lady in Garmin support. Win10 has issues it seems with mtp devices, and has for quite a while. Going to mass storage resolves it all until MS provides a proper fix.

Sorry about my last. I was going to spell it out, but HWMBO called me for tea and I hit the post button instead of cancel. But as suss has now done it, that saves me the job. Very Happy
And made a much better job of it that I would have. Sad

I suspect that the original one had a dead flat battery and when you connected it to your USB skt, it tried to draw more than the 500mA allowed by USB2. The screen dimming is usual (on mine) when you connect it to a computer.
Good luck with it.
