A petition which calls for fixed speed cameras on the Humber Bridge will be considered on Friday.

Driver, Kerry Griffin, initiated the petition on change.org aiming it at the Humber Bridge Board and the Safer Roads Humber Partnership.

The limit on the bridge is 50mph, reducing to 30mph at the toll booths.

Griffin argues: "There are drivers who do not stick to this limit and often tailgate the drivers in front to make those cars increase their speed beyond 50mph. When there's an accident caused by poor driving, in which speed is often a factor, it may close one lane, if not both of them, going north or southbound. This causes queues of traffic trying to get to work, or going home to their families after work, as they have to wait for emergency services and recovery vehicles to attend."

She added: "Accidents may involve damage to the road surface or crash barriers, which in turn have to be repaired, causing more delays."

The petition might have some credibility if there was any actual evidence quoted, rather than just weasel words like "often".

How many accidents have there actually been, and in how many of those was the main causal factor a vehicle driving in excess of the posted speed limit? What were the other causes of accidents, and how often did they occur? Is a speed camera the most effective way of enforcing the speed limit?

Or is this just the chanting of that old brainless mantra "speed kills", with no real facts to back it up?

It would be a disgrace if cameras were introduced thanks to a petition like this. Perhaps another one that seeks randomised control data for the actual benefit of speed limits an camera enforcement ought to be started...?

The problem, as I see it, with 'ad hock' petitions is that the ayes will sign it and the nays will not, thus the result is overwhelmingly eyes. The first question should perhaps be "Do you use the Humber bridge" and if the answer is No, then any further answer is ignored. But often, there is no opportunity to give a negative answer.
The deployment of speed cameras should be based on facts, not 'likes onTwitFace'. Is speeding on the bridge actually the reason for the accidents, or is it something else that would have happened regardless of whether it happened on any speed limited stretch of road and not associated with excess speed.

Perhaps getting rid of the Toll Booths might help. Just pretend that the bridge is in Scotland, everything is free of charge there.

That won't reduce either reporting speeding or reduce congestion. Take the Dartford crossing as an example.
