NOTE: Playing devil's advocate here...

From here: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/schedule/10/made

the regulations for traffic signs say
Quote:
1. Information or a restriction of a description in column 2 of an item in the Part 2 sign table must be conveyed by a sign which—

(a)is of the colour and type;

with this image:

So, if they have to be that colour then it needs a red circle and black text on a white background.

Now, the variable speeds on smart motorways are a red circle BUT the text and background are reversed - it's a black background with white text.

So are they legal speed limit signs?!

some of the newer signs are yellow digits with a red ring on a black background wonder if those are legal?
also if the speed suddenly reduces as you pass do they allow you a grace period where they won't prosecute you for being over. I was recently nearly caught out by a 60 mph limit that switched off for a second and then relit at 40mph requiring some moderate braking to get the vehicle down to the required 40 for the camera sat on the same gantry.

I think you will find they are legal. A couple of years ago, it was found that the 'font' (I think) in the variable speed limit signs didn't conform and a bunch of people got their fines rescinded. HERE is some stuff about it.

Yes, but I can't find a reference. Google is your friend. Very Happy

That font and colour issue was why the western section of the M25 cameras were never activated, as far as I remember. Sure I read that here.

Whether they have since changed the requirement ........

Seems daft to me, if your caught, your caught and if you can't read the speed signs you shouldn't be driving.

According to the documents I linked to they're different colours...

I think I read somewhere that they have a grace period for exactly those instances.

Reminder: I'm playing devil's advocate.

I agree - if you're speeding, you're speeding.

But (devil's advocate again) the law applies to the driver as well as the sign makers.
