Managed to grab one of these whilst on sale at Halfords. I was expecting the traffic updates would have worked via the power cable but it says another cable is required. Does anyone know what cable I need so I can receive free traffic updates in the UK? Thanks Darren

Are you using the genuine Garmin power cable that is plugged into 12V?

Yes, the genuine cable that came in the box. I was thinking as its just the LM model rather than an LMT it doesnt come with the traffic cable. But it definitely has the traffic option when you go into the settings.

If it's a LM model it won't have traffic. It needs to be the LMT or LT model.

The user guide says there is the Garmin traffic live via smartlink option, so traffic updates are available if you have a smartphone connected with bluetooth.

I'd be happy to buy a used garmin power lead with the traffic antenna to see if it works. Anyone know what the model number is?

Well that's different. Yes, you can get it via smartlink but you were talking about the cable.

There are traffic packages available from Garmin but as posted yours doesn't have it out of the box.

Having used both, the digital traffic coverage is far superior to the RDS traffic and moving forward I would only consider a LMT-D unit.

The digital GTM power leads are very expensive and would probably make the combined purchase more expensive than a -D unit. The cheaper GTM units are RDS only so only motorways and major A roads covered. Whether your unit is compatible with any GTM leads though?

I had this issue last week. Tesco had a £25 off Garmin offer on the fuel and I picked up the box for the DriveSmart 50LMT-D but when they brought the unit out, it was actually an LM. However the box had big writing saying "Lifetime Maps & Traffic" so I didn't spot that it was the wrong one. Took it back as I got that same message and a knowledgeable bloke spotted the problem. Unfortunately, they were out of LMT-D so I got my money back (the full whack, including the discount!) and ordered one on "Click & Collect", he even had a spare discount voucher which he gave me,so I got another £25 off! 😊

Used it on Friday afternoon, when the Traffic took 20 minutes off a journey which would have used the M25.

I phoned Garmin and they said it is traffic enabled but I need the GTM 36 cable to receive traffic updates. Now on the lookout for a cheap cable!

To be honest, I would echo what Kremmen said above.

The old GTM cables are very dear, and nowadays we have Digital Traffic which is so very much superior that it's in a different league entirely.

Personally I wouldn't consider a sat-nav that didn't have Digital Traffic.

If you were expecting traffic and haven't got it without having to buy another cable, you would be much better off IMO going back to Halfords and asking for an upgrade (at your own expense obviously) to a Digital Traffic model, on the basis that yoou were expecting Traffic and didn't get it with the one they sold you.

Dales.

Ok, you have convinced me to bring it back and get a LMT-D! I know someone selling an older Garmin 2508 LMT-D. Would you recomend it or should I get something newer? It does come with lifetime updates and maps

Alternatively I can get a 2569 LMT-D for more money.

Thanks

Well I have a 2508 and am very happy with it, of course you take a risk with an older, second hand model. Depends I guess on the price!

About £35 for the 2508 and £75 for the 2569

The 2519 from Halfords cost me £50

Can you let me know the part number of the power cable that came with your 2508? Ive purchased the 2508 and just waiting for it to arrive. Want to ensure it has the correct traffic power cable. Thanks
