Last week I used my 2699 in France and it worked straight away. The problem I had was that it kept on using side roads (i.e. not using motorway) roads at times although I wanted it to use Motorway. Is this because it was trying to use a fuel efficient method?

Is there a way to force it to use Motorway? I see there is an option to avoid motorway but not force it to use it.

Also, can I get to get to a town? It kept on insisting on a road and number.

Were they toll roads? If so is your device set to avoid tolls?

As for towns, just do a where to, towns ... if towns doesn't show click on Where to, personalise and add Towns

As Sussamb said.

Some of us, sadly, have tolls as part of daily travel, and have Tolls enabled permanently. (Mersey Tunnel)

And when I had my money and wallet stolen in Spain, I can vouch for the fact that the Garmin is very good at keeping you off toll roads when Tolls is disabled!

The toll roads was left on to accept toll roads.

I tried to put in town name but it still wanted a number and road. I ended up choosing random addresses!

It won't if you do a Where to, Towns instead of what you're doing which is Where to, Address Very Happy

Be careful, if you think avoidance is On that means it will avoid them. They need to be unchecked.

If it was unchecked then I'm out of ideas. Can you give us the start and end points of your route so we can see what is happening?

I was returning from rue du Perigord Vert, 24270 Payzac to Junction 7 on N89 (near Bordeaux. Iexpected it to take me via A89 / N89. Strange thing is that going to 24270, I was taken via N89 / A89.

Also on a different day, travelling from Libourne to junction 7, it did the same thing.

Well it takes me along the A89/N89 both ways. The only way I can get it not to do so in part is if I select to avoid tolls.

Setting is NOT to avoid tolls. Only thing I can think of is that Calculation mode is set to Shorter Distance (as opposed to Off road or Less Fuel). Perhaps Less Fuel may be the option.

If it is set to shortest I'm still surprised it avoids the autoroute, I've just tried that setting on mine and the route barely alters, just takes the D705 between Perigeux and Payzac rather than following the D704 from/to the A89. Are you able to post a screenshot of the route just so I can compare it to what I'm seeing?

It's possible the 'do not avoid tolls' setting has stuck and you need to master reset your device.
