Thanks. I would but it has to be back with the owner in a few days so will need to go in post Monday....
It's frustrating that new maps are available but can't load them.
Unless there's a way to use the SD card slot?? Got a couple cards spare...
Update - but of course I'd need a backup of the unit or access to the unit files first.... |

Yes, you can download to a clone device but not unless you have access to the .xml file and the nuvi itself. It's all very strange and all I can think, as previously mentioned, is that there is an internal fault. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Thanks to all for posting.
I've given up. Barring any flashes of inspiration I'm giving up.
I did see the Mass Storage icon once and it gave me some hope, but it quickly disappeared....
Thanks again |

That would lead me to think Kremmen's diagnosis is correct - i.e. dodgy mini-usb port. (There are any number of Nüvis that have turned up on eBay because they no longer charge. In your case it seems to be the data pins that have let go first. I've not looked recently, but there were a couple of places offering reasonably priced repairs for that fault - it's an awkward DIY fix, since the socket is a tiny surface-mount affair.)
One thing you could do, is to try and connect the thing in 'Garmin USB GPS' mode. To do this, you have to invoke the hidden diagnostics - usually by holding your thumb on the battery icon for about 7 seconds or so - *then* plug in the USB.
At this stage, you may be rewarded with a new device class in Device Management, called GARMIN Devices. The device itself should/might appear as 'Garmin USB GPS'.
This is the olde-worlde mode that things like the StreetPilot C3xx series used to use and requires GMNGEN.SYS and GMNUSB.SYS to be available on the system. (I believe Garmin still ship these drivers with things like POILoader).
At some point though, Garmin seemed to have stopped supporting this mode (it doesn't work on a 3598) - so I don't know if it's applicable in your case, but you never know your luck... |

Yes, I have these, if anyone is missing them, plus associated files.
