Having owned a Garmin i3 and a couple of Nuvi before switching to TT I'm used to troubleshooting these units. However this has got me stumped.

Its a family members Nuvi 52LM SW Version 4.00 UK & ROI

All was ok whilst she used an old Windows XP PC, I could update the software and maps without any issues. Even when she got a new Laptop with Windows 8 all was well but since upgrading to Windows 8.1 her laptop will no longer recognise the Nuvi is plugged in. The unit powers up and charges ok but Garmin Express, WebUpdater and Device Manager firmly state no device detected.

So far I've tried
- 2 x Windows 8.1 Laptops
- 1 x Windows 7 PC
- 3-4 USB cables (both Garmin and non-Garmin)
- The USB extension cable "trick" - didn't work!!
- Hard Reset - just wiped out all the favourites and settings
- Various USB ports (USB 2.0 & 3.0)
- Developer mode
- Installing Garmin Drivers
- Compatiblilty mode in Windows 7 & 8.1 to run Garmin Express as Windows XP SP3.
- Wiggling and checking cables are secure
- Just about all the tips and tricks I can Google.....

On one boot up it did show the PC icon which indicated it was entering a mode to communicate with the PC but then it booted normally......

Can anyone help?
Garmin can't.....

You could run through this FAQ but may have already done this

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B9b0aa260-3f4b-11e4-eaba-000000000000%7D

If you have exhausted that try these

Thank you

The Garmin FAQ I've been through myself and Garmin have also emailed it to me.

I've pretty much tried all the windows tips.

It doesn't seem to be just me there seem to be quiet a few people suffering the same issue and some say that the Hard Reset worked for them. 've tried this 2 or 3 times now and no difference.

If Windows isn't recognising that a USB device has been plugged in (no double bong) on numerous PC's and various cables then all I can think of is a damaged Garmin mini USB port or internal connection.

Presumably other USB devices work just fine in the same ports.

Does it work OK in the car, charges and fires up automatically when it gets power?

Remove any SD card, if it accepts and has one.

Couple of extras here http://www.gpscity.com/questions?qid=44804

Hmm. Hadn't thought of that....

EDIT: Cant see any damage or obvious obstructions (fluff, grit etc)....

Yup. USB 2 and 3 ports all work fine. Ports even charge the Nuvi just not recognised as a device.

Yes.

No SD Card. Just tried inserting one. Made no difference

All this is pointing to an internal error, given that you've tried various PCs and cables and done a master reset.

Perhaps the Garmin driver is corrupt, but seems unlikely as it's happening on several computers. Confused

Nuvis don't need any drivers, just the standard Windows ones, so it won't be that Wink

..and any drivers that might be needed are installed with Garmin Express and Garmin have already suggested downloading and installing the driver set. Needless to say it didn't work!!

Not my week this week with sat nav - can't work this problem out and having issues with the TT Traffic Subscription on my iPhone app....

Sussamb, what's that trick for switching out of MTP mode ?

Might work in standard USB device mode with a drive letter.

Considered that but the 52 isn't an mtp mode device so is always in mass storage.

So it's always going to produce a drive letter. Sounding like a duff unit.

Mine does this too. However, fi I hibernate (or shut down) my PC, plug in the Garmin and then boot it up, it works fine.

I have other Garmins that work fine.

I have no idea what is going on.

Interesting.

So I tried this. Even messed about with the BIOS settings for power and USB. Didn't know I could charge things off my USB 2 ports if the tower is plugged in and on but not actually booted on!

Anyway what ever I do - no dice......

I'll mess about a bit more later.

Thanks

This is the sort of problem I'd like to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in.

Very difficult and frustrating from afar
