Following on from our story from August 12th 2014 Gibraltar To Introduce Speed Cameras, a decision has finally been reached when to install them.

Last year it was reported that Gibraltar was persuaded to introduce speed cameras to its roads following a petition to the Gibraltar government that received over 2,000 signatures.

The campaign was organised by Richenda Collado Dawes following the tragic death of her son in a motorcycle accident the previous year.

In early 2016, three fixed bi-directional speed cameras will be installed at locations around the British Territory: Devil’s Tower Road, Rosia Road and Europa Advance Road.

At a press conference, the leader of The Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party, Fabian Picardo, commented: "All of us have perhaps been too enthusiastic as we've driven around our roads at different times in our lives and the speed cameras will help us to stay honest when it comes to the speeds at which we drive on our roads."

The caretaker Minister for Traffic, Paul Balban, added: "This will go hand in hand with the speed limit review that is now also complete. It is expected that this will go a long way in reducing the incidence of indiscriminate speeding which will no doubt make our roads safer for all."

Gibraltar has 31 miles of paved highways and the current standard legal limits for cars and motorcycles is 31mph (50kmh) unless otherwise indicated for goods vehicles, buses, etc.
