My new 590LM does all a good satnav should. Love it!

However, most things in my life that I have fallen for in a big way have ended up displaying irritating behaviour after a while, the 590LM included. (Sigh).

It goes like this: I devise a route in Basecamp and pass it to the 590's internal storage. However, immediately before I get to use the route in anger it goes through an internal "recalculation" process, which in most cases changes the route in favour of an alternative way of delivering me to my destination.

I would like to find a way of stopping the recalculation step and to use my carefully considered routes unaltered, as intended. Very Happy

Hi
Yes this can be most irritating. I have a old Nuvi 1690 and a newer 3598. Both did and do the same thing.
I work out the route on MapSource, upload it to the unit and at some point, if not immediately, it would recalculate the route again!
One reason is traffic conditions in the real world after you start your journey; another reason, if it suddenly starts doing it, is that the routing program has been changed by a software update.
Don't know about your unit, but make sure the automatic re-routing due to delays or traffic conditions is set to off or set to ask before re-routing.
Also, when in MapSource (in your case Base Camp) I tend to put in waypoints at various strategic points of the route so it HAS to follow my preferred route.
In this way, even if it wants to re-route, it will always have to follow my route.

I have tried your method of placing waypoints along my intended route and amazingly the route stays good right through the recalc process!. Yours is such a simple solution to an aggravating problem, I knew it was a winner the moment you described how you solved it. Humans must triumph! Thanks a bunch!

One small thing to remember is if you are forced to divert off your route, say due to an accident, road closed, etc, and you go past your next way point, your GPS might route you backwards to go to the waypoint it thinks you missed. My one keeps on nagging me to do a U-turn even after I am back on the route after the diversion!
What I do on the rare occasions when this has happened, is to stop in a safe place (not on the motorway, of course), cancel the route, then start the same route again. My Nuvi 3598 realises it is not at the start point and asks for the next waypoint I want to go to. It will route me to that from my current location, then I can continue on my original route.
Anyway, glad to know it worked - happy to help.
Regards

Is it not possible do delete waypoints from a route. Bit of a shortcoming if not.

At least on my unit I don't think there is a way to delete the waypoint without stopping the route.
Also, deleting the waypoint would create a problem the next time - unless it was re-placed.

What we need is an option to temporarily disregard/bypass the waypoint say when the unit asks us to do a U-turn (?)

That's what I was on about. If you delete the 'next' waypoint, the one that it is asking you to U turn for, it should then recalculate and navigate from where you are to the next waypoint/destination. Not saying that you can actually do it on Garmin, but you can on iGO

Had a play and yes you can.
Assume you have a route with a waypoint.
Click the hamburger menu.
Click Change Route
Click Skip Next Destination (which is the next waypoint)

Use a shaping point instead of a waypoint and a nuvi will ignore any you miss. I believe you can use shaping points on aa Zumo 590?

Thanks for that sussamb, missing waypoints and the unit not being able to guess that it's 20 miles behind me now because Ive wanted to ignore it but insists on turning around to go back for it is a tad annoying.

I shall look up shaping points and try adding them on my 2599.

You can either send routes containing shaping points from Basecamp or change viapoints in routes to shaping points and vice versa on the nuvi itself in the Trip Planner app.

Thanks, I can't use Base Camp. As a Linux user, everything I do needs to be directly on the nuvi.
I'll check out converting way points to shaping points.

I frequently have the problem of missing a way point after setting up a route on my 2598. However it is simple to delete. Go to the list of directions by touching the top of the display and scroll until you see the next waypont. Touch the waypont (green on mine) and "go to" and the previoùs waypont(s) will be removed.
