The Scottish Roads Partnership will be begin turning on speed cameras on three separate motorways from next week.

The average speed cameras will be rolled out on the M8, M74 and M73. The first goes live between junction three, Carmyle, and junction six, Hamilton on Monday.

The roadworks projects covered by the cameras, which spans two years, is set to cost half a billion pounds.

A spokesman for Transport Scotland, commented: "We know from our experience of major road infrastructure projects that safety cameras are a tried and tested approach that improves safety for both road users and the adjacent construction workforce during what will be an extremely busy period in terms of construction."

He added: "Once complete, congestion across the central Scotland motorway network will be significantly reduced, with travel time reliability between the main route of Glasgow and Edinburgh improved."

The WWF (formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund) joined the discussion: "The Scottish Government should take the opportunity to monitor the results of installing these average speed cameras and then seriously consider making them permanent after the road works are completed. Alongside other tools, average speed cameras are a cost effective way to reduce climate emissions as well as fuel costs for motorists."

Other locations for the average speed cameras:
M73 between junction 1, Maryville, and junction 2, Baillieston
M8 between junction 8 Baillieston and junction 10, Easterhouse
A8 from Baillieston to Newhouse
