The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales, has called for increased power for local councils to tackle lorry drivers who breaks height or weight restriction rules.

The LGA is seeking the same powers as Transport for London which allow them to impose fines. They say "There has been a spate of accidents involving lorry drivers driving irresponsibly and bringing bedlam to small rural communities - and action must be taken immediately to curb this."

A spokesman for The Road Haulage Association argued: "How are you going to enforce this? In London the roads are filmed with cameras. In the country it will cost the communities a lot of money to have cameras."

He added "There is a problem with poor signage. On some roads lorry drivers do not know that there is a weight restriction and people use satnav so drivers are very reliant on signage."

The LGA highlighted one case of a driver who was compelled to sleep in his cab for three nights after his satnav led him down a narrow lane in Devon where his lorry got wedged.

Obviously they are using car SatNav units instead of dedicated large vehicle ones.
Maybe better info at entry ports that if they use inappropriate units and end up where they should not be they could be fined.

What's the problem with using existing legislation? If there are restrictions in place, then there are road signs to that effect. If an inappropriate vehicle then gets trapped, the driver has surely driven without due care and attention? The LGA should merely agitate to get them nicked for it - can't be hard to provide evidence, a simple bunch of photos of the signs at the entry point to the road/s and of the stuck vehicle. Not necessarily I regularly gave to enter 7.5 tonne limits to deliver only usually except for access or loading. Which is what I think many of the compaints are about. These are usually put up because there's a large plant near by and residents would rather trucks use another route into there's on in Norfolk on a drunk road absolutely no need for it no restrictions yet its 7.5 tonne ecept for loading.

There's a major perception problem with hgvs in this country. And it needs to change. People need to realise what we have to put with for working conditions. Which just don't happen in any other industry. Ie long unsocialbe hrs complete lack of facilities the list goes on. Unfortunately many don't understand or want to understand that without us they would starve have no clothes. No fuel. The list goes on.

Alot of these bodies are made up of people that no clue about how the goods transport system operates. And usually have political agendas/ ambishons of there own.
