Speed Camera System Clocks Up Half A Million Pounds

A set of average speed cameras that went live in January have already caught out almost 7,000 drivers breaking the 50mph speed limit.

It's estimated that the new cameras, which monitor the Port Talbot stretch of the M4, have netted over half a million pounds in fines in the period from 19 January to 3 June 2015. From January 1st to the 19th, speeders were just sent a warning letter.

Chris Hume, partnership manager at GoSafe (GoSafe is responsible for speed camera and red light enforcement in Wales), told BBC Radio Wales "It's a 50mph limit because the road itself is a very difficult road to go along. It was built in the 1960s. It was built as a bypass."

He added "It's really difficult to see when people are coming on to the motorway and therefore there’s quite a bit of sudden braking or accelerating and because of that it’s an area that we have to be very cautious of."

Claire Armstrong, from Safe Speed, the anti-speed camera campaigners, argues that it is the cameras themselves that cause the sudden breaking.
