It's quite basic but it does the job it was designed for. I have a few enhancement requests but they are quite complex and finding the time to investigate is my current issue.

Been playing. I have re- downloaded the zip file again, but speed cam files only. Do I need to download the file with voices and images as well, as I have noticed that when processing the zip, only the csv and bmp columns are populated? If I just use the produced gpx files, will it affect anything if I don't process the bmp and wav? (Does that make sense?)

I personally just unzip the cameras element. I already have my preferred 24x24 bmp set and another bespoke voices set.

Once you have your's all working as you want it then also just unzip the cameras which will leave the images and voices alone.

Jusg to be safe backup your images and voices elesewhere so they can be restored if they get accidentally overwritten.

My voices came from here a few years back and are a female voice, very clear. I've tried to locate them again but I can't find them. I seem to recall at the time they were advertised as a bespoke set created here. If anyone finds them...

Will do, thanks.

Looking forward to going to work tomorrow for the first time in a long while, although only going as far as Peterborough, so not too much of a workout.

Thanks everyone that has had an input, it has been very helpful and interesting Smile

Me again Very Happy

Another couple of hundred miles down and a few more questions.

1. On my old TomTom, there was a small piece of software called GPSFix that was downloaded regularly to help speed up the unit finding the satellites. It also kept it alive while indoors (was it designed to do that?). Is there something similar as when sat indoors trying to work out routes, it won't allow me to do anything until it finds the fix. There also used to be an option with TT to start from last point the unit remembered you at.

2. As I knew where I was going today, I just had the unit on to see what routing the unit did. I came pout of a village and the unit wanted me to turn left up a farm track!!! I have the unit set to avoid unpaved roads and this road has never been paved. I know I keep harking back to my old TomTom, but it is all I can use for reference. I used to have an option to give map corrections, which then would be shared with the community, plus mark on my unit any changes, until the next map update. Is there something similar as I don't seem to be able to find anything?

3. Upon arrival at the destination, the route automatically cancels and zooms out. Is it possible to stop this happening?

All in all though, I am liking this unit and am very happy I returned the nav4 TT unit and bought this Smile

1. No, your Garmin goes into standby mode instead unless you switch it off completely. Incidentally it's worth doing that every couple of days just so it starts 'clean' again. Should you notice any weird behaviour you should certainly do a complete shut down and restart. Indoors set your nuvi to simulation mode, this enables you to plan etc.

2. I've never been directed up a farm track. You can report map errors through HERE who supply the maps to Garmin, via this website:

https://mapcreator.here.com/mapcreator/50.79289,-0.35507,10,0,0

Do you know where the error occurred? If so are you happy to post it here so we can look at it?

3. Not really. I run with autozoom turned off as I prefer to control my own zoom levels, you could try that.

1. As a part of #1, I also can't find an option to navigate from another position, except my current location. I wanted to run the route with the dodgy directions, but that is 5 miles away from here and I couldn't find a way to do it.

2. This is a Streetview image of the road the unit wanted to direct me down today: bit.ly/1JBWDEw

3. It's not the autozoom so much that is an issue, but the fact the route automatically cancels. Surely there should be an option for only the user to cancel it?

1. You can set your location to somewhere else once in simulation mode. Do a Where to, then when you see the map appear on the right side of the screen there is a Set Location button bottom left. If you're not happy with the position on the map tap the map and reposition, then tap the bottom bar, now select Set Location

2. Link's not working?

3. Afraid not. Once you've reached your destination the route cancels. Not sure why you'd want it any other way?

Just checked and it certainly seems that that track is marked as routeable!

I'll edit it on the HERE database. It may take a while for it to make an official update so if you're likely to be that area a lot I'd create a custom avoidance for that area.

GPSFix was (and still is) a handy bit of TomTom marketing. The satnav picks up exactly the same details from the satellite as soon as it gets a fix, it's just details about the satellites and if you used the TT every day, or even less often but at least regularly, you were downloading the same information. If you updated your TT on the computer once a week, but drove and used the satnav twice a week, your satnav had better GPSFix data than the computer download! I ran my old TomTom for literally years without that GPSFix - it did, once upon a time, actually get corrupted and positioned everybody off road! It would not help indoors in the slightest - you need clear view of satellites to use them, so it would work if you put the unit at or near a window.

I used to think the option to start up where you left off was the location where you left off, but it wasn't - it was something to do with settings.

And for comparison, my TT virtually every time, tells me to "keep right" so as not to drive through every layby. And the latest units don't have the map correction submission facility - you have to go into the TT website - which is difficult if you want to mark your present location and your computer just happens not to be in the car with you! They all have their quirks, it seems.

...and, I believe that even TT's automatically cancel the route once you have arrived.

Not my old via 120, and there was an option in the Go 50 to prevent it doing so too.

Opps!.
I'll have to be more aware, but fairly certain that it does on all of my TT's. Perhaps it's just that I haven't selected the *option* to do so.
Sorry.

On my Via 135 if I select 'Navigate to' while indoors, where I seldom get a satellite fix quickly, it offers the option to 'Use last known location' and states what that is. It's always the last place the device had a fix.

My previous device, a GO 720, didn't have that option, and it's one of the things I prefer on the new one.

My 2599 picks up it's location before I've got out of the driveway. The only time it does take a few minutes is after any update. I'm wise to that though and I leave it switched on on a windowsill till the 'aquiring satelites' turns to 'ready to navigate'.

Proper Job Smile
