Hi Everybody

as I like my Gadgets, and I got a bit of Xmas BONUS money
decided to treat myself, I`ve already got a TomTom 6000, and I`m about to go and do a Price Match at Halfords for a Garmin 3598....Argos are doing it for a reduced price of £249.99 Very Happy so hopefully they will match!?

will have 1 sat nav in my car and 1 in my band van
got a Vauxhall Insignia Elite on a 2014 plate, and in built sat nav is Pants!

anything to look out for before I buy a Garmin unit?
think I read Halfords sometimes flog off 3597`s as 3598 units?
how does it compare with TomTom 6000?

I used to have Garmin years ago, had 2 top of the range models, cant remember which ones, but only about 4 years ago, had 3 replacements as screen was going grey, the car would run out of road and other bugs!!
which I got my money back for from Halfords...
I then bought a TomTom 1005, sold that and bought TomTom Camper, which I sold last week on eBay for £215!
I've had my TomTom 6000 about 11 months, quite like it, but they have cut a lot of features out, screen is a bit rubbish... but I really like the look of the new Garmin and hope these freezing problems and grey screens have been sorted?? everyone happy with their units?
I`m going to buy a Sandisk Class10 16GB SD Card from Argos, just incase!
as I read it wont update maps or something?
I travel to Europe with my band a fair bit, so has to be flawless

anything else I should look out for before shelling out £250?

Much Appreciated

Wayne

Difference between the 3597 and 3598 is that the 98 has digital traffic. IMO you definitely don't want one without these days, Garmin's digital traffic works really well (although I have the 2508 model).

Haven't heard about those issues for a while so probably resolved, no such issues with my 2508, been perfect since I got it.

The 'impression' I've been getting with the reports here is that the host of features on the 3x premium units overwhelms the processor at times, or it used to. The main complaint was that the map redraw speed suffered. There have been a few firmware updates and we haven't had any adverse reports for a while now.

I would look at the features list and possibly consider the 2x range. I would most definitely get a -D digital traffic model as sussamb recommends as it is so much better than the normal TMC RDS traffic.

I got the 2599LMT-D and it is superb.

No probs at all here with my 3598 since the first two trips I did with it about 18 months ago. On those two trips I got the grey screen on each occasion, but the machine hasn't missed a beat since. More than happy with my purchase. Very Happy

I have a 3598 LMT-D - so I assume it has the same physical body as the one you are thinking of getting.

My concerns are:

The weight of it and the fact that it is held a good way from the next part of the mount eg the sucker or the air vent mount. So it can vibrate and move around.

The device use a very strong magnet to hold the satnav device to the mount that holds the ball socket. So if you are taking the device by plane to use in a rental car in Europe you have to consider how you are going to package it - perhaps using the cardboard box it is supplied in.

The 2589 body is much more user friendly and lighter - I have a US one so it definitely travels in carry on luggage OK

AS regards navigation - both have got me to were I want to go to.

Knowing what I do now I would not have been seduced by the 3598 and the extra features.

However YMMV

s, the consensus is that after the latest updates on the 3598, their has been no grey screen of death?

will I need an 8GB or 16GB SD Card for it?

What cable is in the box?

My 2597 came with a TA20 but the 2599 came with a TA10, and neither came with any addon cable. Both of these cables are antennas. I'd try without the addon, see what happens.

If it isn't a TA cable then it might need the separate antenna, but in that case I would guess you can hide the power cable out of sight.

Strange ... I wonder if you've been sold a 3597 with a digital power cord? My 2508 came with the digital receiver built in and a thin power cable, which as Kremmen says contains the antenna. I thought 3598s were the same Confused
