Are you using the Garmin cable? Also connect directly to a USB port and not through a hub.

It should have come with your nuvi? I know some 3rd party cables cause issues.

Other trick you might try is ensure your nuvi is in mass storage mode, it won't be and will be in mtp mode unless you've changed it. To switch it to mass storage mode:

1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
3. The Developers Screen will pop up
4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "dashboard" screen, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen.

it was already in mass storage mode (think you helped me with this before)

still no go..found the short lead that came with recent refurbished edge 800 and that don't work either

Also, when i unplug it it freezes and does not restart automatically. have to shut down and restart.

Only other thing to suggest is a master reset, but note you lose all your favourites if you do that, so hope you back them up regularly.

I assume you've tried rebooting your PC?

Yes, if your PC won't see them you can't now back up Crying or Very sad , hence my comment 'hope you back up regularly'. Also if you use Basecamp your favourites will be there Confused

Just spotted this.

I've never used the Garmin lead, just a normal mini USB that works fine. In fact the one I use is a Canon Ixus camera lead.

Yep, some do but then some don't ... Garmin issued this FAQ so always worth checking if you have any issues:
