New arrival routes for Bristol Airport will see it become the first major UK Airport using GPS technology.
The system uses the new Performance Based Navigation Standard Terminal Arrival Route (STAR) which replaces the reliance on traditional navigation beacons with satellite navigation technology which will allow for higher precision approaches.
Previously aircraft navigated between ground based beacons but the new GPS technology will allow for more reliable and predictable flight paths that allow for a reduction in emissions, an increase in efficiency and a reduction in noise to local communities.

Does that mean they're not going to fly over our house any more? We are on the main approach route, albeit we don't suffer as they are still at a reasonable height, about 3,500ft as they pass over.

I live in Somerset about thirty thousand feet below one of the major air routes for aircraft routing via the Brixham beacon.
On 'good' days we get dozens of near parallel con trails, very boring. With this news we are likely to get much prettier patterns.
Good for Bristol.
Incidentally and irrelevantly, Bristol Airport used to be Bristol International Airport. Now they fly to a few more countries and have dropped the International!

I shall be interested to see whether Birmingham Airport adopts the same system. Lots of aircraft fly over my house just outside Warwick when lining up to land. I sometimes watch aircraft movements on the Flightradar24 website. I can often see aircraft in a holding pattern, which prevents them from all trying to land at the same time - but they all tend to go round the same loop which probably inserts a greater delay than is necessary. So a smafter system has to be good.
