Sorry for the duplication, but can't find the post where this was mentioned. Is it models ending with a 9 that have the receiver in the device, as opposed to in the power cable? _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

The latest ones ending in 8 certainly do. I'm unclear which others do. |

Be aware though that the built in traffic receiver still needs the appropriate power cable draped across the dash as this is the receiver aerial/antenna.
All that has changed is that the older units had the receiver as a sort of 'blob' on the power cable, now moved inside the unit.
Why they don't include a small stubby aerial on the unit itself so the cable can be hidden away ? _________________ Satnav:

Never bothered me that the cable's on view. Having a 'stubby antenna' would cause mounting problems I suspect. |

The cable is a bit thicker than average, and perhaps a bit longer, but is no more unsightly or inconvenient than any other sat nav power cable. |

If you're purchasing online, buy via QuidCo - it could knock anything up to 10% off the price. |

Interesting thread.
I have the external digital receiver and use an external antenna plugged into the external antenna socket on the "Blob" which allows me to hide the thick power / Antenna lead.
Can anyone say if the "built in" receiver has a socket for the connexion of an external antenna? _________________ Jonial

It doesn't, but as it's getting its signal via DAB rather than FM it doesn't need one. |

Thanks Sussamb
As far as I know the GTM70 is a DAB receiver not FM as the GTM36 is.
The traffic reports I get are far far superior to the GTM36.
I just thought that if the the new units had a socket for the Garmin external antenna then the antenna / power cable could be hidden within the dashboard. _________________ Jonial

Are we confusing Mobile internet data with terrestial broadcast data.
I ask because both FM Radio and DAB radio are actual broadcasts and as such any receiver needs an satisfactory antenna to work - hence the facility to connect an external antenna to the GTM36 and GTM70.
If the built-in receivers are using the mobile phone network then the receiver will have a suitable built in antenna.
I think we are getting a bit deep now !! _________________ Jonial

Getting deeper ...
DAB frequencies are higher than FM frequencies. Higher the frequency the shorter the wavelength so the shorter the antenna required. FM traffic in UK often needs the additional aerial plugged into the 'box' on the combined power/antenna cable. DAB traffic shouldn't need that.
I suspect (though don't know) that the early DAB 'cables' were simply the older 'form factor' of FM cables, simply to reduce cost. Now receivers are included within the GPS there is no need for anything other than a simple power cable/antenna. |
