The download is exceedingly slow (340kb/sec) and to add insult to injury Garmin Express is apparently downloading 2 different versions of the map
Full coverage of Europe 2015.20
AND
numaps Lifetime Europe - EU 2015.20

It is now 23:30 and the download started at about 10:30 this morning!

Also, for some reason the latest 2015.xx maps are considerably larger than the 2014.xx series !

But 13 hours to download? That's just silly. What's the speed 2 bits per second? Surely Garmin can do better than that?

As I'm away I haven't looked yet, is the 2015.20 much bigger than 2015.10? If so I suspect it will be due to more Active lane Guidance junctions being added, personally I find ALG just 'eye candy' and would be happy to do without it.

I doubt that's a Garmin issue, I've never heard of a map update taking that long. I just downloaded 2015.20 onto my laptop over the hotels wifi (as I'm away on holiday) and it took just under 2 hours, about what I would expect.

I'll leave updating my satnav until my return to UK, just in case!

There is something else wrong. My download took less than 30 minutes from start to finish.

Plus, the second apparent download isn't one. I saw that too, but it didn't do two downloads.

That's correct. Basically the map data is downloaded once to the PC, and then built twice, once for use on the PC by Basecamp and once to be sent to your nuvi.

"There is something else wrong. My download took less than 30 minutes from start to finish."

If you allow Garmin Express to download maps in the background – something which I allow – then the downloading process has already happened. Even though you may think otherwise! Then the only thing that needs to be done is the map getting installed on the device; that is about a 20-30 minute process.

This is a preference that one sets in the app.

I have not spotted the background preference but mine certainly downloaded twice. The app showed the first as finished and the second proceeding at around 300kb/sec. I left that running when I went to bed.
During the day I did other things that required internet access and they all worked normally. It was only Garmin that was slow. My line is only 3Mb but that is 10 times the speed I got from Gsrmin servers - that is not typical. I usually download a map in 2 to 3 hours.

I have everything ticked, anytime updates and I ALWAYS have to download updates after the satnav is connected. And if I disconnect the satnav during the update then it stops and i have to start all aover again.
That's with Lifetime maps!

It is a pity the preferences do not allow one to indicate that one always wants the maps to be installed on the local computer. It is easy to missed the Advanced options button and have to repeat the download to the computer.
