A Cleveland police officer has been dismissed for failing to calibrate and check speed camera equipment properly.

Three other officers were also investigated over the processing of evidence of alleged speeding offences, but have been cleared by an internal investigation overseen by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

It has been reported that drivers may have got away with speeding offences as a result of the officer's actions.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that no drivers were wrongly prosecuted.

Really? The Police do their own Calibrating and at officer level?
I find that worrying.
When I was a builder, most pieces of equipment came with a calibration certificate and sticky date-label attached to the machine. When the date was up the item was sent back to be tested and re-calibrated by experts.

Probably taking about a hand held which is basically a laser range finder which takes 2 measurements in a set time period and then uses the time, distance & speed calculation. They have a self test function so only need to be pointed at an object a know distance away (ie wall in police station car park).
