This year’s Farnborough International Airshow featured lots of flying hardware and was declared a success on the first day with aircraft orders totalling $33 billion and a further $8 billion committed for engines. It goes without saying that the aircraft displays were quite spectacular with passenger aircraft acting like nimble fighter jets, and the fighter jets themselves roaring around the skies with afterburners ablaze.

Aside from the magnificent flying machines there was a section of the exhibition halls dedicated to space called the Space Zone. If you get a chance to visit it during the public days it is well worth a visit. In particular, from a navigation perspective, ESA are there with a Galileo display, Roscosmos were also there with the new GLONASS-K satellite, and not forgetting Surrey Satellite Technology who built the Galileo test satellites. Apart from that anyone interested in space will find a wealth of information on both the rockets, spacecraft, and operators from the Eastern Atlantic region (Europe and Russia).

One of the concerns about GPS systems onboard aircraft is the susceptibility to GPS Jammers. This was addressed in one of the series of seminars presented during the event. These jamming devices, despite being illegal to use, are freely and legally available. They are used to block location signals being used for trackers and other monitoring devices based around GPS. This introduces a problem when one of the GPS jammers is close to an airport. The concern is that the jammer can interfere with the onboard navigation systems putting hundreds of people at risk. The seminar highlighted the resilience that a combination of Galileo and EGNOS provide to minimise the effects of the issues created by the jammers.

The Farnborough Air Show continues through to the 20th July with general public access on Saturday and Sunday. Check Farnborough Airshow for details.
