Nuvi 3598 maps

I have a new Nuvi 3598LMT-D satnav and I have just installed a map for the USA to accompany the maps of Europe that were pre-installed.

In the "Settings/My maps" it shows that there are three maps for Europe and one for the USA All four are ticked.

CN Europe NTU 2014.40 All
CN North America NT 2014.40 ALL
Europe DEM
CN Europe NTU 2014.40 3D

I have two questions

1. Why are there three individual Europe maps - what parts of the mapping do they perform?
2. How do I change from the Europe map to the USA map? I have looked through the user guide and searched the Satnav settings without success.

1, The 3 EU maps are the main map, the Digital Elevation Model map, and the 3D map.

2. No need to select the US map, if it's ticked it's selected.

I could not ask for more.

One further question.

The new USA map was purchased as a download from Garmin. Do I need to take any further action, such as initialising the map, or is it all set to go?

If it's ticked it's all good to go ... you can check simply by doing a Where to and select somewhere in the US ... then look at the location, or alternatively zoom way out and scroll across to the US then zoom in again.

Note when you arrive it may take a while for your satnav to work out where it is. That time will increase if you're moving, so try to be patient and wait rather than drive straight off in your hire car

In the name of pure research please will you:
with all the maps enables (ie ticked)
try and select an address in France by the following method.
select "Where To" on the first screen
Then "Address"
Then "Change Country"
Then type "France" it may offer you a list of countries with just the F typed
Select "France"
Then does it give you only the following States or Provinces
Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique, Saint-Barthelemy

if so you have the bug as I and others have.
If it allows you to Spell City, or Spell Postal Code or Search All, then the bug is not in your version of the firmware.

To actually set destinations in France (Should you wish to travel there) you will have to deselect the North American maps.

Please let us know what result you get.

With all maps ticked I get the following.

1. Where to
2. Address
3. I then get a page asking me to enter the house number. There is nothing on the page where i can select a country.

Sorry to be of no real help.

Perhaps there is somewhere I can change the method of address entry?

I have just checked the maps after downloading a map update and I now find that I only have two of the three Europe maps I listed above.

I am now downloading the maps again yo see if I can get all three!!!

Unfortunately I did not record which of the three was missing.

Hmmm ... strange

Can you try unticking the UK maps and then see what you get?

Also download JaVaWa's Device Manager from here ... http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

It will check the maps on your GPS and card and show up any errors.

I downloaded the manager linked in post above and found that it would not detect the satnav itself (should it do so?) but would read the sdcard when inserted into the laptop.

When the sdcard is in the laptop it tells me that I have both Europe and USA maps installed and that both should be usable in basecamp. Strangely the Europe map has a warning that "the Europe map is not unlocked for the linked device and may not be used".

When I try the satnav without the sdcard the Europe map is displayed and the device works OK.

It seems that the device is not properly detecting the two maps on the 32GB sdcard......and yet.....the device shows that the two maps are present?????

Questions

1. How do I unlock the Europe map on the sdcard?
2. How can I make the device see the maps on the sdcard?
3. How can I delete the Europe maps on the internal memory?
4. What else can I try?

1. You can't unlock the map. Device manager was simply telling you it's locked because it didn't detect your satnav. Why that is I'm unsure. It's never failed to detect my four.

2. Your satnav must be reading the maps else it wouldn't list them.

3. I can't see why you want to delete maps off your satnav, in any case that can stop it working.

4. Did you try unticking the UK maps as I suggested? Does the US map then work?

Giving more advice remotely is tricky. If 4 doesn't work and you want more help can you post the folder/file list on both the device and card.

With the sdcard out of the satnav I can see two maps

1. Europe DEM
2. CN Europe NTU 2014.40 3D

With sdcard in the satnav I can see four maps
3. CN Europe NTU 2014.40 ALL
4. CN North America NT 2014.40 ALL
5. Europe DEM
6. CN Europe NTU 2014.40 3D

With the sdcard in the satnav and only the North America map ticked (No 4 in list), even after a shut down and restart, I still see only the Europe map.

Presumably I am only closing one of the two sets of Europe maps.

I will try and get copies of the files in my device and post them here.

How can I get a copy, as a text file, of all the files in either the internal memory or the sdcard of my 3598.

I cannot find a drive letter for eith of them.

If I knew the drive letter I could get the necessary file using cmd.

One other point.

On the sdcard the Europe maps are in the "Garmin" folder and the USA maps are in the "Maps" folder.

Is this correct?

Under "Settings/Map & Vehicle/myMaps" four maps are visible and ticked

Maps 1, 3 and 4 are in the "Garmin" folder on my sdcard and map 2 is in the "Maps" folder on my sdcard.

Garmin Folder contains
1. ghapprom.gma 2.3 KB
2. gmapprom.img 3.78 GB
3. gmapprom.uni 50 bytes
4. gmapprom.gsd 0 bytes

Maps Folder contains
1. D2338160A.gma 2.53 KB
2. D2338160A.img 2.10 GB
3. D2338160A.uni 25 bytes

No matter which maps I tick or untick I can only access the Europe map.

Can anyone help me?

Yep, all that looks correct. Why do you say you can't access the US map?

Have you tried zooming way out, scrolling across and zooming way in to see what detail you have in the US map? You'll either see the basemap that all nuvis have or a detailed map. If you then see a detailed map set the nuvi to simulation mode with your location in the US. Now you should be able to select addresses etc in the US.

If you don't see the detailed map try copying the Map folder, and the files it contains, from the SD card to the nuvi itself and see if that works.
