Speed camera coverage is to undergo a near two-fold increase under new Transport for London proposals.

The number of miles of road with speed and red light cameras in London will almost double under the new plans.

In a bid to improve the safety of the capital's roads, following implementation of the proposals, camera coverage would increase from 250 miles of road to in the region of 470 miles.

The plans also involve installing average speed camera on four busy radial roads to reduce speed and accident rates.

According to Transport for London's official website, speeding played a role in 22% of all fatal collisions on London's roads back in 2011.

At sites where driving too fast or without due care and attention is believed to have been a factor in a fatality or serious injury, speed and red light cameras have been set up.

Reportedly, on roads where safety cameras have been introduced, the number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) plummeted by 50%.

While the capital currently has in the region of 900 digital and wet film cameras (speed and red light), the vast majority are wet film, which Transport for London insists will be obsolete by 2015.

So 78% of fatal collisions where caused by NOT speeding.

Also in London

I noted this week that the cyclist groups were calling for safer lorries as too many cyclist are getting killed on London's roads by truck.

I can think of a cheaper solution and much quicker to implement.

DON'T CYCLE BETWEEN THE RAILINGS AND A TRUCK TURNING LEFT. Exclamation

Its not rocket science

I'd like to know where you can go fast enough in London to set off a speed camera?

Whenever I've been unfortunate enough to have to go to that hell hole (sorry Londoners, but I just can't stand the place), I've only ever averaged about 8mph...

I haven't been to London for years, but on You Tube recently, there was a video filmed by young drivers themselves doing over 100mph at night on London streets, so yes of course it is possible to go fast in London.

In fact there is plenty of 100mph videos on Youtube in London area.

Driving standards in outer London are atrocious. It's not uncommon to see someone doing 20 to 30 mph over the limit on urban dual carriageways whilst weaving in and out of traffic.

I'm all for more cameras if it helps reduce the bad driving I see every day

That's not driving standards, that's flouting/ignoring the speed limit.

Not necessarily the same thing at all.
