This week has got me thinking. I've travelled through roadworks Specs zones at M4 Junctions 16 to 17 and M5 Junctions 12 to 11A.

On the M4 there are 4 cameras in each direction, on the M5 only two.

In both cases, it's a pretty lengthy stretch, with no intervening turnoffs or service areas.

So why do they put only a Start and End camera on one set of roadworks, but Start, End and two Intermediates on another? Seems to me if your average is over, it's over, whether in the middle or anywhere else. For example, it should make no difference if you blaze down a mile, but slow down at the end of it, as opposed to staying under the limit all the way along. Either way it should take the same time to get from start to finish.

But then, what do I know?

It maybe something simpler than that?

How about if the roadworks have been moved or are likely to move and they plonked some camras down and just don't want to move them?

I bet it costs a few hundred quid every time they move those big concrete blocks!

Probably more like a few thousand!

I wondered about it and thought, maybe its psychological - nice yellow camera on a big yellow pole - EEEEK! Slow down!

Or maybe it's a good cash cow? - all those idiots who don't understand "average" who slow down for the big yellow pole. With four cameras, they get three helpings of the excess speeding cherry?
