Pioneer have chosen Japan's CETAEC show to take the wraps off their new Raku Navi AVIC-MRZ009 system.
The double-din, in-dash device features a sensor that can detect hand movements in front of the display allowing gestures as a way to interact with the unit.
Holding your hand in front of the display will bring up a soft menu with on screen controls and an information panel which can show data such as current track and you can zoom in and out of the map with left and right swipe motions. It's a novel approach that could make certain operations much simpler and remove the need to prod small on-screen buttons.
Although Pioneer do not appear to have made much use of it in the AVIC-MRZ009 it does show what is possible and hopefully we will see more initiatives such as this to make operation simpler and safer.

I can see it now. "Sorry officer, yes I know that that hand gesture isn't in the Highway Code but I was only interacting with my Raku Navi, honest!". _________________ Robert.
