Recent figures from the Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, have claimed that the number of road fatalities and serious collisions have been reduced by 72% at speed camera sites in Kent over just three years.
The figures, which were calculated for the period between 2009 and 2011, set out to show how the number of incidences dropped significantly during this period, coinciding with the introduction of speed cameras at crash hot-spots.
Both fixed and mobile cameras were taken into account. Sites with fixed cameras witnessed a 72% reduction in serious injuries and deaths (from 363 to 103) whilst those with mobile cameras experienced a 67% reduction (from 118 to just 62).
Katherine Barrett, spokeswoman for the partnership, claimed the results demonstrated "that the benefit of safety cameras to casualty reduction is substantial".
Barrett was keen to stress that numerous methods are employed to reduce speeding, with the 77 fixed cameras located in the county reviewed regularly.
Information garnered from this analysis will soon be displayed to drivers via information boards in a new scheme launched by the partnership aiming to raise driver awareness on speeding.

It would be interesting to see if the number of speeding tickets at these sites have actually gone down or up. Only then can you be sure it's the cameras reducing accidents. _________________ PGPSW Grand Finale Prize 2010 - TomTom Via LIVE 120 EUROPE.
