No it's not April 1st and yes you did read that headline correctly!
Researchers in the US have successfully trained rats to sniff out land mines by identifying the chemicals that are used in their construction.
The rats are equipped with a GPS receiver and a transmitter which enables operators to map out areas where land mines are located and plot their locations on a map.
The rats are not heavy enough to trigger the land mines and the team, based at Bucknell University are now developing a system that would allow customers to train rats and use them for land mine mapping.
With 20,000 people falling victim to land mines each year, anything that simplifies the method of identifying and removing land mines is to be applauded.

Perhaps i could train one to follow a route and run in front of the car - then I would not be distracted by an in-car device? _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
