Need to upgrade from a 10 year old iPaq+TTN system. I've looked at the AR and HUD apps, and the main problem is you have your device right up there on the dash for smash&grab. No way to connect a remote camera.
So I've defaulted to a system similar to what I have, but updated.
Proposed: An iPhone 4 with bad ESN, as I don't need phone service. For apps and maybe traffic, wifi teathered to my Android phone. Would this do?
And mounted in a cradle in front of the car's tach, like I've had it for years. But I read that the iPhone 4 GPS can't really keep up with demands of TTN, so a cradle with GPS chip is recommended. I've always used Brodit cradles though, so could I instead use that and tie in my Holux GPS pod by bluetooth and use it for TTN? If I mount the cradle upside-down will TTN flip to the right orientation?

I have never had any issue with the GPS in the iPhone4, the iPhone 3G I had was pathetic in terms of signal reception, the 3GS was a slight improvement. The iPhone4 really negates the need for the external GPS IMHO - Mike

You can't use a BT GPS, iOS doesn't support it. And why would you? It offers no benefit over the internal one. Despite what you have been told, the iP4's GPS is more than adequate.
Whilst TomTom will display in landscape or portrait but it will not rotate to upright if the iPhone is upside down in portrait mode.

Yes, but I have the HTC Nexus One, and the GPS has always been simply busted. Not to mention the chronic power button problem which everyone has. I have lost confidence in HTC,
Further, G**gle is the greatest data-mining, customer info selling, targeted advertising snoop-machine ever built in the history of the World. They keep your movements, store your voicemails (indeed your voice calls if Talk), your email. and anything else you'll give them. I've been around black hats enough to know what can be done with this info. Once, there was a simple demo that showed that just using the searches you've done on that-search-engine-everyone-uses, you can assemble a shockingly accurate picture of that person. G**gle stores -all- your information -forever-. That is unacceptible to me. Europe has mandatory data retention laws of six months. Who knows what will be un/acceptible in ten years? I can't believe that people blithely hand over their lives, all their contacts, and networks to them. Startpage.com is every bit as good.
I've looked at HUD and AR apps, but they are not ready to use yet. Given user reviews here the only other nav app I'd consider is Navigon, but in the end chose to stay with updating what I know. I highly value TomTom's easily showing an overview of the whole route and I don't know whether any other app can do that, and I like the UK voice of "Jane". The user interface is nowhere as good as HUD or AR, and the graphics aren't great, but it works and has served me well for 8 years.
Would still consider Navigon if compelling, but my impression is about the only good thing about it is the graphics. Wish I could use the AR Wikitude, but simply must use it with a remote camera so my device doesn't attract thieves.

Well, your description of G**gle got me scared oput of my wits, so I typed in Startpage.com and this is what I got - I didn't go any further than this yet?????
However, before posting I hovered my cursor over the Details word and got their assurance that they get the details from G**gle but don't pass my details there. It certainly looks a nice clean engine and a couple of searches have come up with the expected and desired results.
