The recent review of a video logging device at £200 made me wonder if the iPhone could be used for such a purpose? With the lovely clamp I bought, why not? So I searched for "Drive recorder" and "car logger" and there are a few, but these ones look sensible:

Not sure how Time Lapse would be of any use? Surely the whole point is it needs to be recording all the time in order to capture any incident?
More important is the ability to control quality so you can balance that against the amount of space required and perhaps the ability for it to record in an endless loop and only save events that are either marked by you or most recent. _________________ Darren Griffin
My assumption would be that it would take a picture every second, or whatever makes sense. Enough that it would show a car moving into the wrong lane, while not taking so much space. I'd suppose that the resolution could be better too, but maybe that isn't so important.
Regardless, few if any seem to do that, so I'll take what is available. I'd just like to not waste loads of money. Any recommendations? Maybe someone should do a roundup here?
Decided that going to the dentist was a good time to play.
The MyCar Recorder software works on phone and iPad, but I only had my phone with my. I set it up in a clamp, gave it power, and tapped the button. Off I went. Hmm, my bluetooth kit not working. Stopped in a layby to investigate. Seems the app has a sound recording option, turned that off, podcast back on, off I go. Got to other end, nothing recorded at all. Zilch. Not even up to the layby. Hmm, will try again when I've had a chance to play, but not good.
Safety Rec app started up, simple user details entered (supports multiple drivers), and then three options, start driving, view history, and settings (back to user setup). Start driving seemed obvious, and it says it will start when GPS fix found. Off I go. Got to other end, and I have recordings of bumpy bits and a few junctions and the like. Not all the journey, but it seems good. Not worked out how to get the 1 min pictures yet. But the interface works well, and it does what it says it will, without fuss.
Both made the phone warm, and need power of course for any length of journey.
Having had more time to review, the 1 min pictures are automatic anyway. You can filter them in or out in the results, and are a helpful reminder of things.
An ambulance passed me at one point in my journey, but my smooth driving didn't trigger any recording of it. I think you might be able to tap the screen to record when you want, but have to try that sometime.
