Does the app/database offer any coverage in France? If no, are there any other iPhone apps that do?
I know icoyote is meant to be good, but only available via the Belgian app store.

Yes it does. But if you want the map tiles to load then obviously it will use (expensive) roaming data. You can turn off the map though and still have all the warnings.

I came back from a 2 week holiday in Southern France a short while ago.
I took the opportunity to buy a Dell Streak and then install Camera Alert on the Streak and my iPhone 3GS.
Both covered all the speed cameras I went past, coverage was good.
Don't know about mobile coverage as I never saw any and I don't think it alerted me to any (or many).
One problem I had was the iPhone app locking up a lot. The way I was using it was purely in list mode, so when it locked up, there was no way to tell apart from the alerts coming just from the Streak.
The Android app is a lot more stable than the iPhone app at the moment, so do not trust the iPhone app - keep prodding it to see it hasn't locked up.
