I apologise in advance if this question has already been asked but used the 'search' facility and could not find anything.
My query is this - during daylight the SPECS cameras on the M25 seem to have the desired effect and only the odd motorist seems to ignore the 50 mph limit. But at night, many more motorist seem to ignore them, is this because they do not work during darkness ? I have asked around and nobody seems to know the answer as of course these cameras do not flash.

Thanks, but I wasn't asking so that I could risk it ! I was in a car with my son and we were just discussing whether or not they worked at night. Does anyone know someone who has been caught on a SPECS camera at night ?

Surely the infra red is to assist in bad light conditions - rain, fog, gloomy, and flashes every time irrespective of lighting state. I can think of no reason why Highways Agency/Speedcam Organisation would take the trouble to switch the Specs cameras off at night. Think about it - digital, so no film to replace, on/off switch somewhere, but presumably not on the lamppost they're sitting on, maybe some highly paid person sitting somewhere just waiting for night-time so he can switch them off, then back on again at crack of dawn next morning? It'd cost more for his wages than the electricity they'd save.
I don't know anybody who has been caught by any static camera, day or night, sorry. But I have seen Gatsos flashing at night. And somebody on here recently said he could see the infra-reds flashing when he looked through his camera (or did they change the channels on his built-in TV? ) _________________ Dennis

From SpeedCameras UK "Consisting of a minimum of two cameras each fitted with infra red illuminators fitted on gantries above the road, so they can work day or night."
And from the Vysionics web site (they appear to have taken over Speed Check Services who were originally responsible for SPECS),
"Each camera unit has an infrared ANPR camera and an infrared illuminator, which enables number plates to be read, regardless of light or weather conditions. A colour day/night overview camera is also included, which enables overview images to be captured in daylight and in most street lit environments. Infrared floodlights can be installed where street lighting is not available and visible lighting is undesirable, making overview image capture possible in complete darkness."
Another snippet from their web site - "Typically, only 1 in 10,000 vehicle journeys results in a ticket".
