84 cameras, 7.5 miles. I haven't had chance to get Anita to do the sums for me so in my ignorance I make that one camera every 300 or so yards.
Another bit of good accurate reporting?

Guesswork based on 42 cameras each way probably with 3 actual cameras on each mount gives a Specs pole about a 1/2 mile apart. Some will probably be on slip roads as well just for good measure if it's not three lanes. 
Still, it's nice to see they're going to put the limit up and not down when putting the cameras in. 
TfL don't count Nottingham as "major urban".

don't forget these are the SPECS3 cameras so don;t need to be on a single stretch so will probably cover side roads etc too.

i bet it was a single bit that went to 40 in the middle of a 50 so by putting it up to 50 makes it easier to calculate average speed on the whole bit

I was on the A13 sat night and noticed that the yellow gantries have been put in place all ready for the cameras to be mounted,in the earlyhours of the morning it is like a race track comiming out of London once you have cleared the 40 mph limit and gatsto camera's.
For most of the A13 between the M25 and the Limehouse Link[adjacent to Canary wharf] it is3 lanes in both directions.

actually, i'm pretty sure i read that the new specs cameras would work in both directions (for motorbikes too  ) so 3 lanes with 2 cameras on each is 6 per 'point' which cuts it down to 14 'camera locations' or 7 in each direction.
wonder if that's where the 84 comes from?

There will be 37 locations according to TfL. I am not sure that they are actually talking about SPECS3 here yet, we wont be able to tell until the cameras are mounted. If they take images to the rear then they are SPECS3.
I do like the way that they state that this is an accident BlackSPOT more like a STRETCH.
Also despite saying that the accidents are speed related they are putting the speed UP! Actually in reality what they are doing is putting the speed back to where it was a few years ago, before they dropped it and put GATSOs in.

I am inclined to agree with you, but only because I have cruise control. I drive past Cardiff on the M4 twice or 4x a week and there is a stretch of roadworks that lasts about 12 miles, most of which has Average cameras. It's a lot less stressful with cruise switched on. |

I too prefer ASCs, but then I too have cruise control. But in any case, I think it makes a lot more sense to avoid the sudden braking at a fixed-speed camera with its lack of road awareness, interspersed with 'excessive' speeding in between, where there MIGHT be a very good reason for the limit.
However, I was a bit concerned at a post somewhile back about someone getting a NIP for an average speed of 52mph, a borderline excess it seems to me, in a 50 zone. I think that monitoring your average speed over an uncertain distance is much more difficult than knowing you are over/under at a specific point, so you don't know how much corrective action you need to take if you have 'drifted up' at some point.

The way to avoid that is to have a car like a Mercedes. Mine not only has cruise control, but also a speed limiter. The speed limiter will not allow me to 'drift' above the limit.
To receive a NIP stating 52, which does sound a bit marginal, the reading on the car speedo would have been about 57 as all UK speedos report about 10% under.

Any comments on the ACPO "10% + 2mph" tolerance? Unless that's an urban myth, there shouldn't be a NIP for 52mph, averaged or static. |

it's a guideline not a law. if it was law then the speed limit would be 57mph nt 50! technically you can be prosecuted for going 50.1mph in a 50mph zone as you are above the legal maximum. the guidelines however recommend that drivers are given 10% + 2mph leeway to account for minor fluctuations in speed (hills, bends, wind etc) and to take into account inaccuracy of car speedo's.

Yes, and there are a few constabularies to be very wary of about this as they operate more on the law than the guidelines. I THINK two examples are in
North Wales, and the Kent police force areas.
