I tried following the unit into the sea so I'm a bit wet!
However, I found 99 lobsters, a WWii submarine and the most wonderful mermaid Very Happy Very Happy

I will have to complain to Garmin as the sea area was not included!
What about Trade Description?

The Database on My Oregon

On the Oregon I find the zoned datatabase works really well.
As Custom POIs do not have any facilities to have any other detail except the Icon - then the Zoned Icons contain the individual camera speed.

These are shown in the Screenshots #1 and #2

.

As you approach an idividual camera you get a proximity warning at the distance built into the database [0.5miles @ 70mph] as shown in screenshot #3 together with an audible 'beep'.

If you approach at over the speed limit you get continuous beeps and flashing further warnings as shown in screenshot #4

The Zoned database is downloaded to the PC from this website.
It is loaded to the unit with Garmin's POI Loader [without options being changed]

To sum up:-
1-The icons with speed values showing up on the unit at various zoom levels.[zoom in in town -zoom out on the Motorways]

2-A visual red banner alert and a beep at the inbuilt distance/proximity value.

3-A Continuous overspeed banner alert and beeps until you slow down

If you are not happy with the inbuilt icons then 'Mod' Gerry has produced a comprehensive database of alternatives.
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/speed-camera-icons.php

On my unit I have my own icons to suit my eyesight and varifocals.

Since the new Firmware I have experienced far better results for the Garmin Discoverer Mapping. I am quite pleased with the results. Very Happy

Has that render quality improved? Still looks poor in the screen-shots?

[LEFT Screenshots]
Here are 3 initial screenshots of Discoverer when the software was released.

[ RIGHT Screenshots]
Here are 3 screenshots of Discoverer from the new software – yesterday.

.

.

.

Compare the standard of the screenshots on Garmin’s Website with my up-to-date screenshots [yesterday & today]

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=255&pID=33294#imageTab

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/alt-image.do?pID=33294&img=ImageScreen1Large

It is interesting to see Garmin update the Oregon Firmware very often but the Colorado is falling behind.
It would be interesting to compare the results from the Satmap Active 10.

Generally, in a few months the Discoverer results have improved and in my opinion justify the cost [you get autorouting for all the UK as well - on CityNavigator Maps]

The results for the 1:25 maps should improve but the results for 1:50 maps are very useful [zoom level 800ft, 0.2miles, 0.3miles 0.5miles]
The zoom level 800ft and 0.2miles are particularly acceptable for my use and are better on the unit than the screenshot shows.

BUT
each Discoverer SD card comes with the outdated firmware 2.8, you must update to firmware 2.94

I have Oregon 2.94 with OS GB Discoverer South West Coast Path (South).

The OS GB Discoverer renders SO SO SO much better than on previous versions.

I have the following comments about the maps which are displayed at
certain zoom levels though.

In an area where the greatest OS map detail is 1:250k it behaves perfectly:
At 8km zoom, the 1:1,000,000 map is displayed (good)
At 5km, 3km, 2km, 1.2km zoom, the 1:250k map is displayed (good)
At 800m and below the vector maps are displayed (good)

In an area where the greatest OS map detail is 1:50k it also behaves
perfectly:
At 8km zoom, the 1:1,000,000 map is displayed (good)
At 5km, 3km, 2km, 1.2km zoom, 1:250k is displayed (good)
At 800m , 500m, 300m zoom, the 1:50k map is displayed (good)
At 200m and below the vector maps are displayed (good)

In an area where the greatest OS map detail is 1:25k it isn't quite perfect:
At 8km zoom, the 1:1,000,000 map is displayed (good)
At 5km, 3km, 2km, 1.2km zoom, 1:250k is displayed (good)
At 200m and 120m the 1:25k map is displayed (good)
However.... at 80m and below I think the vector maps should be displayed,
although 80m is still readable for the 1:25k map. As it is, the 1:25k map
is displayed right down to 5m (which is unreadable) and the vector maps
never get displayed.

So, to summarise, apart from the lack of vector map detail at 80m and
below in areas where there is a 1:25k map, it is perfect!

Does anyone else see the same results as I do in the 1:25k map areas?

Anyone else?

Thank you for a very good comprehensive report.

For some reason the Speed Camera database and the Oregon changed the output recently.

I was getting constant audible alerts which was soooo distracting!

I found a 'work around' and a better result for my particular database needs.

I have the speed rated zoned by type icons in view constantly [depending on zoom level] and one visual alert [with type/speed/camera ID]and one audible alert. They are only 'proximity' alerts - the 'overspeed' alerts has been removed by me.

Far less distracting.

Probably another of Garmin's Super Secret Updates that doesn't get listed...
