Improvements in mobile UI will determine success of navigation services in 2009 says Telmap CEO

Telmap, the world leader in mobile location solutions, has announced the introduction of Telmap Active Interface - a new Graphical User Interface (GUI) engine that works across all mobile operating systems currently available on the market. The development, which is the first of its kind, sees Telmap using a Lightweight User Interface Toolkit (LWUIT) from Sun Microsystems as the base technology for the GUI’s core elements. This in turn offers users the first unique cross platform GUI engine to provide the ultimate experience available on mobile devices.

All future product developments from Telmap will use this new GUI engine as standard, which will allow Telmap’s products to continually offer the best and consistence experience for mobile search, mapping and navigation to users on all mobile platforms. This consistent high standard ensures easy porting of graphic elements amongst different platforms, allowing also weaker mobile platforms to still provide rich user experience.

“Operators are fast acknowledging the importance of a consistency in user experience across all devices and services they offer”, said Oren Nissim, CEO of Telmap. “Telmap recognised the importance of developing such a framework that will easily allow porting of graphic components across multiple mobile platforms in a standardised manner. Essentially Telmap aims to raise the bar in mobile user experience with an appreciation of those specific requirements needed for location based applications.

Users will enjoy high quality and advance experience from the animation and animated transition screens to the on-map transparent floating menus. Users will also see a configurable screen layout for menus, tabs and dropdown lists as well as a cleaner, more flexible font effects and screen transitions. The overall effect will create a cleaner, sharper offering for users.

Telmap’s service is already available to millions of consumers globally and is available in Europe (Orange FT Group, Vodafone, SFR, The Carphone Warehouse and O2), in North America (AOL MapQuest, Sprint, ATT), and in Africa (Vodacom).

Telmap will showcase the new Telmap Active Interface at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month (Hall 1, stand 1E02)

Intelligence of mobile navigation technology drives better user experience than current generation PND technology says Telmap CEO

Telmap, the world leader in mobile location solutions, has announces the next generation in MOND (Mobile Optimized Navigation Data), a patented technology from Telmap that provides users with the most advanced experience in mobile navigation. MOND2, the next generation of MOND, introduces an innovative methodology that allows for a seamless and data optimized experience in mobile navigation that remains independent of the network.

As a result of Telmap’s legacy in mobile navigation and its unique approach to examining user behaviour trends, Telmap has analyzed in excess of one billion journeys made using Telmap’s routing and navigation services. Such information has allowed Telmap to introduce a market leading technology, which will optimize mapping information for purposes of mobile navigation in an intelligent and cost effective manner across a wide range of low to high end mobile devices.

“The MOND2 technology boasts our latest innovations which firmly put mobile navigation ahead of anything currently available on the market, but technology is only half the challenge”, said Telmap’s CEO Oren Nissim. “As an industry, it is our responsibility to make sure we don’t just ’copy and paste’ the PND solution to mobile, but leverage the unique facets of mobility in handheld devices and develop an experience and service that fits that mould. Our focus is to create a more personalized location experience that can guide the user to any destination in the most efficient manner over any number of modes of transport - not just by car.”

Unlike other wireless navigation technologies that only download the requested route data from A to B - which should a user deviate from that journey would mean they would need to reconnect and recalculate the journey - Telmap’s latest MOND2 technology has the ability to automatically and seamlessly adjust to practically any change in a users’ route without the need to recalculate or download additional information.

By including multiple alternatives to the route in advance, the new MOND2 technology ensures there is no delay in a users’ navigation experience. That consistency of experience also applies when a user makes or receives a call or using another function on the handset.

Following a recent announcement, UK analyst firm Strategy Analytics cited Telmap as users’ preferred navigation solution above competitors Nokia Maps, Garmin and TomTom. The report also revealed that more consumers are ready to adopt mobile navigation in the UK in preference to the in-car PND.

Telmap‘s MOND2 technology will be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month, visit Telmap at Hall 1, stand 1E02. You can also follow Telmap and CEO Oren Nissim on Twitter at www.twitter.com/telmap

Press release: RoSPA’S 74th ROAD SAFETY CONGRESS TO LOOK TO THE FUTURE

Lessons learned from previous strategies to reduce road deaths and injuries will form the basis of discussions about the future of road safety at a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents conference this month.

The safety charity’s 74th Road Safety Congress - entitled Road Safety: What Have We Learnt? - takes place in Blackpool from February 23-25.

It will examine how the successes and failures of history can inform accident prevention strategies for the future, particularly as road safety enters a crucial stage of planning. The Government’s current road safety strategy runs until 2010, and the next strategy is under development.

Significant success has been achieved in reducing road deaths and injuries in Britain. In 1977, for example, 6,614 people were killed on the roads, compared to 2,946 in 2007. But some groups of road users have fared better than others.

The congress, sponsored by Britax Excelsior Ltd, will feature top-level speakers who will explore this uneven progress, while also looking to the shape of things to come as road safety strategies adapt to the challenges of the 21st century.

Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, with responsibility for road safety, will be among the speakers at the Hilton Hotel.

Rob Gifford, executive director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), will highlight the changing context of road safety, exploring issues such as climate change and an ageing population.

Progress on reforms to learner training and testing will be outlined by the Driving Standards Agency. The potential for electronic stability control (ESC) to save hundreds of lives in Britain each year will be presented by Thatcham, the vehicle research centre. Managing occupational road risk will also be on the agenda.

Kevin Clinton, RoSPA head of road safety said: “This is a crucial time for road safety as we look ahead to a strategy to take us beyond 2010.

“Although tremendous progress has been made in reducing road deaths and injuries, on average eight people are still killed on Britain’s roads every day.

“Congress will look back at previous approaches to casualty reduction, examining what worked well and what was less effective. Learning the lessons of the past will help us save more lives in the future.”

Is GPS Fleet Tracking the Answer to Falling Profits?

DUBLIN, Ireland, February 9 /PRNewswire/ --

GPS technology may be your solution for high fleet costs, low productivity and long work hours.

Times are difficult, especially for SMEs with vehicle fleets.

Fleet costs continue to rise while business slows. In some cases, drivers don't do all that they can to be most productive and mitigate costs. And time is always an issue. SME owners work an average of 15 hours more than the general population according to a survey by 02.

Fleet owners also deal with a host of other daily issues that can wear down even the most hardened manager: deliveries to the wrong address, drivers getting lost, billing disputes, drivers missing in action ... the list goes on.

All of this while trying to handle service issues and run a profitable business. It's no wonder that many SME owners feel they don't have the time to get everything done and spend enough quality time with family.

However, the growth in the popularity of GPS tracking systems has heralded a new way for SMEs with vehicles to do business. It's a complete paradigm shift and early adopters are already realising the significant cost savings and other benefits of installing GPS tracking in their fleets.

"A GPS tracking system is really a complete management tool," said Derek Bryan, Ireland Sales Director for FleetMatics, a leading GPS vehicle tracking provider. "It enables SMEs to easily reduce costs and improve efficiency. For example, we see our clients' fuel costs cut dramatically by up to 15 percent."

Cutting Costs While Improving Business

Traditionally, cost-cutting measures tend to result in reduced service and decreased customer satisfaction. To cut costs SMEs often have to cut customer reward programs, customer service initiatives, discount programs and marketing. This usually results in a self-defeating cycle that can further reduce sales.

With GPS fleet tracking, SME owners not only cut costs, but they actually improve their business model.

"Since fitting FleetMatics to our fleet, our savings have been tremendous," said Patrick Brooks, General Manager for Holemasters, a concrete drilling and cutting firm. "In one year, we have saved over euro 240,000 through increased productivity. We have also reduced our fuel bills by over euro 10,000 annually."

One vital way FleetMatics GPS fleet tracking can help SMEs decrease costs is by reducing fuel consumption. Fleet owners have the ability to ensure drivers take the most direct routes to job sites, eliminate unauthorised journeys, reduce idle times and dispatch drivers nearest to a job site.

In addition to reducing fuel consumption, GPS vehicle tracking can reduce billing disputes and provide accurate payroll. For example, the FleetMatics solution provides fleet owners with accurate information on when a vehicle arrives and departs a job site and then compiles the data in management reports.

These reports can be used to determine how long an employee worked at a job site and provide accurate invoicing. In addition, the management reports can serve as automated and accurate time sheets for employee payroll operations.

Choosing the Right GPS Solution

There are literally hundreds of GPS vehicle tracking suppliers on the market, making it difficult to choose which system will work best for your business. The key is to find a company that delivers a GPS solution that contains in-depth reporting, ease of use, reliable connectivity and excellent customer service.

In-depth reporting features provide SME owners with the data they need to make sound business and efficiency decisions regarding their fleet vehicles and drivers. In addition, accurate reporting of speed, vehicle usage, idle times, and start up and shut down can be utilized as part of an employee reward program to encourage fuel-efficient and safe driving habits.

Many companies create GPS solutions from a technical viewpoint without considering the usability of the system. A company that understands the need and has extensive experience in serving the SME market can greatly enhance the results of a GPS solution.

For example, the FleetMatics GPS solution was developed by professionals that have run their own vehicle fleets and have practical experience using GPS tracking in their businesses.

"Our personal experience and knowledge has been utilized in the development of our system from the ground up," said Bryan. "We have over 7,000 customers who use our system on over 70,000 vehicles."

Another consideration is system uptime. Be sure to ask any prospective GPS company how often their system is online and how often they experience disconnections.

Finally, customer service should be a major consideration when choosing a GPS solution. With the growth of demand in GPS tracking, flimsy companies have sprouted up offering discounted services with poor-quality systems and even poorer customer service.

Reputable GPS companies will be responsive to customer service, technical and training requests. In fact, the best GPS companies provide these services at no additional costs to their customers.
