We got an interesting article in the mail recently about traffic flow data capture. While you could brush it aside as poorly disguised marketing it does actually provide some interesting insights into the status quo of the US consumer telematics market.

Why North America Is Slow to Develop Reliable Real-Time Traffic Data

There was once a time when weather forecasters were blamed for misunderstanding what Mother Nature had up her sleeve. Today, it is traffic reporters and other travel advisors. They just haven’t gotten the bumps out of their traffic data systems to provide the kind of accurate information U.S. drivers can depend on for their commutes and other travel chores.

I have a Garim 710 which often has no traffic data or wrong info.
EG. In Liverpool on the M57 delays between Juction 4 Kirkby and juction 5 York.(as we all know York is nowhere near Liverpool) Sad

I also have a Citeron C8 with sat nav It seems to be a lot better.
I can see what radio station it is getting the TMC from and have a list of other stations to manual change to. ( Radio City is never on the list which could be why my Garmin dosn't have any info if the local station is not sending any)

As we know both systems use Navteq

I think as a whole the info is getting better it depends on what system you have and how much they put into getting the data to you

Well, making traffic information (RDS-TMC) available free of charge like in Europe, instead of suggesting to re-introduce a national 55mp speed limit "to save gas" would actually be a useful step, rather than a pointless feel-good measure.
