Great news :-

Options-System-Interface[Garmin Spanner]to get the unit to work without 'drive mode'.

A major step forward to see the unit work in a 'non-drive mode' in the car and on the PC

When you have somthing like this in the car you can use a regular USB cable.

Playing around with TOPO GB.
I had just TOPO selected and the contour lines are distracting.
Select both TOPO and CityNavigator and the contour lines go and you have 'relief' mapping with CityNavigator detail!

Strumble,

Thanks for all your posts re Colorado 300 - your comments and screenshots have been really useful in persuading me to opt for a Colorado.

Based on your earlier posts, and as a cyclist who generally sticks to roads, I'd decided that City Navigator was the better of the two mapping options. However, as I live in fairly hilly country, the prospect of relief mapping is enticing, particularly if it will also show paths.

My query is this: as I also cycle in cities, I suspect I'm going to need City Navigator in any event. However, in your experience, how well does City Navigator cover UK country lanes? Would it be sensible to get Topo v2 as well to make up for any shortcomings - which would also bring the benefit of relief mapping etc?

Many thanks!

Take a look at:-http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/

Follow the drop down boxes and you can zoom into an area of your choice for any Garmin software!

If you feel you can trust me - PM your area of interest and your email address and I will see if I can send you screenshots!

The UK Topo maps do show roads with names and this data can even be used to navigate to a location.

Perhaps not as up to date as the roads on City Navigator but still okay.

The new Colorado carry case/pouch.
The unit picks up signals with the case closed and while carried on the belt.
The case is solid and therefore protects the units from knocks!

Too late Rolling Eyes mine has some superficial scratches caused by it bumping into various bits of the Lake District Fells whilst attached to my rucsac!

Still I will probably get one to stop it from getting worse.

Strumble,

Can I ask you two questions.

Firstly, is it possible to store numerous maps on a single SD card for the Colorado 300, with the ability to revert between them. (If so, is it worth purchasing a 4gb card?)

Secondly, can you load City Navigator NT 2008 (for Europe or America) from a DVD, as in the link, or do you have to purchase the SD card from Garmin?

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=11526

Thanks,

Jordan

Yes,
I have CityNavigator Europe v2008, Topo and Metroguide NA on one SD card.

I never load the entire disks, I only load the areas/map tiles of relevance.
Why load Eastern Europe or Spain if I never go there. Loading the maps to the SD card takes a lot of time even for a 2GB card so a 4GB card would drive me crackers!

I have never used [in any Garmin unit] a card greater than 2GB. Loading a SD card into the Colorado is easy compared with loading a micro SD card into 60CSX. You do not have to switch off or remove the batteries. You change the SD card while 'active'!

You can use/change the individual mapping software loaded on the SD card as shown in the screenshots:-
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=386262#386262

The link you supplied is to 'Update' software. You already have to own unlocked copies of the map. You need the full DVD version v2008. Do not buy pre-loaded SD cards as you need the DVD to load on the PC, Plan routes on the PC, and record your tracks on the PC.

There have been a few problems with the NT version so I use Non-NT CityNavigator.

Any help?
Keep asking but I'm going to Guinness now!

Thanks very much strumble. One more thing; would you recommend the Colorado 300 over the Vista HCx for the average user.

All the best,

Jordan

The Colorado is a new unit on the market. It has problems but Garmin usually sort them out through software updates.

I sold a GPSMap 60Csx [similar to the Vista HCx] to buy theColorado so that should answer your question.

It is what you want from a Garmin unit.
The Garmin website has the ability to compare the units.

Whatever the unit you buy, ensure you get the ability to use the maps on the PC, and remember, the mapping software is extra and could cost more than the unit! Confused

Sorry for all the questions but I have one remaining question. There has been much confusion about whether the Colorado can take SDHC cards. I really would like to use a 4GB card - yet all SD cards of this size seem to be SDHC.

Many have said that the 4gb SDHC cards do work with the Colorado 300. Can I ask ask whether you have tried an SDHC card - otherwise, which card do you use?

Thanks,

Jordan
