BUS LANE CAMERA NICKS 400 IN 3 DAYS Jan 24 2004

But culprits escape fines

By Charlie Gall

ONE bus lane camera busted more than 400 drivers in just three days. The queue jumpers were snapped on one of the main routes into a city centre.

Police and council chiefs have spent £400,000 on bus lane cameras in a bid to stamp out the motoring menace.

But the 436 drivers nailed will escape the £30 fixed penalty.

The authorities hope the motorists snared in the first week will heed written warnings.

An Aberdeen City council spokesman said: ''To say we were slightly surprised by the figures is an understatement.

''It illustrates our point that there is a real need for these cameras in Aberdeen.

''But we don't want to come down too hard on these drivers, given the scheme has just been introduced. ''They will receive letters telling them that this kind of behaviour will not be accepted in the future.''

When the scheme was first launched on Holburn Street, many branded it a waste of public money.

But at a rate of 436 in three days at one camera alone, the system could rake in around £1 million a month.

The scheme a first for Scotland began last week with the introduction of eight cameras at so-called problem areas in Aberdeen.

The machines snap the registration plates of cars which illegally stray into the lanes at peak times. The police then decide whether or not to prosecute.

Council officials estimated they would catch around 3000 drivers each month.

Neil Greig, head of policy at the AA, said: ''With these figures, it seems the initiative could be more of a money spinner than a traffic calming measure.

''But it does make sense to educate drivers before you start hitting them with enforcement measures.''

Sue Nicholson, of the RAC, added: ''It's like using a hammer to crack a nut it's too heavy-handed. It could easily be dealt with without resorting to enforcement.''
