As you're obviously made of money....good choice ! I've yet to find somebody who uses one at the price they charge....suggest you try and get a refund, and then comeback here for some impartial advice.

Hi Sherry...please don't double post....the other thread you've posted on, gives quite a lot of useful information. I for one, would stick with one of the 'majors'....it all depends to a degree, on what you actually want it for ? Does he just want a new toy to play with ?....UK use only ? To be honest, if it was my beloved I'd rather she told me what she wanted to purchase so that I could have some input....SatNav that is. I don't know where you bought it, but assuming they stock other devices, you would be advised to take a look at the TomTom range in particular, (IMHO).

anyway...i want a sat nav with good quality definition and a big screen. Also want it to be a touch screen and one that talks. Want a full postcode search and 1 mainly for the uk. Would be useful for Europe too.

Just a good one thats easy to use and looks nice in my car...hehehehe

Take a look at the TomTom site...(not the most user friendly, we would all admit,) but it will give you a good idea from the most basic to more flexible approach. And DON'T take too much notice of all the idiots that have been causing bad press recently....when using satnav, keep in mind your own common sense....nobody ever said it was perfect, and to be honest, where I went wrong in the early days, some 5 years back, was not reading the handbook...I thought I knew best !!

And then go on to the following for purchase or very good advice.

http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/forum/

http://www.totalpda.co.uk/

Both excellent company's to deal with and very useful user forums.

ps And then back to your retailer, for, hopefully a refund or exchange.
Good luck !

Sorry, I mean't to say, be VERY wary if you or he are thinking of purchasing off Ebay....there are a lot of 'illegal' offerings, not all obviously, but if you do, you may well get caught out when you try to activate the device on line with the manufactuer....they are pretty smart when it comes to software piracy. The Tom Tom application is free...you can download it now if you want, but the maps are what have to be purchased and activated before you can use them.....and no, they are not 100% up to date, but then, neither is the AA 2006 road map you can buy in Smiths. I say again, give Total or GPS a quick call, and they will be happy to talk you through the, numerous, options...(and I have no connection with either...just one happy customer!) Hope that helps as to be frank, most of the High Street really don't know what they are talking about most of the time...trust me !

Hi i have just got the Tom Tom GO 700 Sat Nav (GPS ) basically SatNavs use the GPS (satellites ) to plot positions etc.

Anyway i had a Snooper S3 which i got for the speed camera detection, now compared to the Tom Tom the Snooper isnt as good, although the Snooper was £60 and my Tom Tom was £349 from PC World.

To me there is no comparison the Tom Tom is very sexy and its camera database is far more accurate than the Snooper Enigma database in as much even road work and temporary camers are detected and warned.

Have a look at the Tom Tom range, they have in my model the blue tooth feature that will work as hands free on mobile phones etc.

So you get both a good satnav and a good speed camera detector

You know what? Before i even read ur post TomTom, i was just gonna say that im thinking of buying the TomTom GO700!!! Have been reading about it just now and i think its a good choice.....u know all this researching is driving me mad and making me think all the time...im in my own little world.

It has everything i want....touch screen, full postcode search, clear maps, has a voice but the speed camera detector...it says that u have to buy that separate and download it or something right?..Or is it already on the hard disk of the TomTom....

Another query, when i do buy it...do i just plug and go?..Or do i need to register or download something etc...????

Thanx....any advice will be appreciated Smile Wink

Sherry mine came with a voucher in the Tom Tom box for a free download from the tom tom site. Plus from here you can download it as well ( i did ) and i signed up for £19 for the year.

Go for it the 700 is very nice, if you find it hard to get, try the 710 model as its slightly newer, you might get the 700 at a reduced price as its a slightly older version.

These are the nice features:

Excellent as a sat nav

Camerea detection / location is really good (better than Snooper )

Has night time mode so looks cool in the car (lights up in blue etc. )

Loads of other good features and very easy to use with pc etc

Has remote control as well as touchscreen

Windscreen bracket / sucker is excellent

Sounds are very clear

Maps for all of Europe are already loaded

Why not come along to the Expo in Edinburgh on Saturday, this way you will be able to try all the different devices out, see the units and get any advice - should be a good day out http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=38074 Mike

Some good advice there Sherry.....the 700 is a very nice all in one device...stick it on the windscreen...away you go! Pop down to Halfords, maybe, and just ask for a run through....plead your ignorance....if you're happy , go for it...or search around on the net for the best 'deal' if you want the very best prices...but DON'T let them talk you into it if you're still not sure....come back here.
While mine is the TT Navigator5 version, I use it with my PDA as very much a dual purpose system and as an extension of my home PC for email etc. on the move. (You're nearly there....does he know yet ?)

hi sherry a gps would only show you positon sat nav will guide you to a destinaion, give you voice instructions, and automaticly reroute you should you take a wrong turn.

to be honnest all satnav's are about the same, on some the routing is different to others

also the menu system on some takes more getting used to have a look at the reveiws weve done and any other reveiws out there and then make your mind up

here is the link for the sorties archive have alook through i dont think weve seen the indago yet
