Sorry to be a pain but I'm new to this. I am on V3 and it is rubbish. I've downloaded v2.7 which was fine. How do I go about getting 2.7 back into the i3 please?

Double click on the 2.70 zip file then select a folder to unzip to suggest c:\temp.
Have you installed the I3 usb driver if not obtain from here and install
http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591
Now connect the I3 to your PC using the usb cable the i3 will power on its self.
Go to the folder you unzipped 2.70 to and double click on the loader icon select usb option and then select next.
Accept the warning that you are going to put a earlier release of software on and proceed on let the erase and load take place untill the message comes up that it has finished.

Go through the settings and ensure they are to your satisfaction (they have all been set to default)
And that should be you back on 2.70

One thing I found was that it erased all my favourites. Is there any way that these can be backed up?

As for backing up your favorites download from here :

http://www.easygps.com/download.asp

When you have downloaded and installed select preferences and then add gps from dropdown menu select garmin and finally I3.

Receive will read from the I3 and of course send does what it says.
When you read you then can save to your PC so that next time you can load this file and send direct to the I3
