All,
I have been given some reliable information from a friend in the know.
As of the 1st April 2006 the new digital automated tracking system between junctions 3 & 7b on the M42 is scheduled to go live.

There are 276 Digital Cameras which have been set to 2MPH tolerance
You will not see any flash. The 1st you will know when you have been caught is the day the postman delivers the £60 fine
Sad

And it goes live on the first of April does it? Laughing

I'm very sure somebody on this forum would have spotted 276 cameras being installed over the last few months!!

Anybody spotted anything?

little faith.........

More than 50 gantries at 500m intervals above the motorway carrying large, lane-specific electronic Variable Message Signs (VMS), Advanced Motorway Indicator (AMI) signals, Advanced Motorway Signs (AMS) and digital speed enforcement equipment. These will relay information to motorists to open and close lanes and control speeds to prevent flow breakdown.

211 fixed operational cameras at a total cost of £1.25 million, together with eight fixed enforcement cameras at a total cost of £360,000. A further eight fixed operational cameras are planned on the ATM project by December 2006, at a total cost of £320,000.

Are these cameras not the ones that will be used to open the hard shoulder to vehicle use during peak traffic times, whilst closing the lane if someone needs to use it for what it was originally intended - a breakdown.

I hate to think of the consequences of this system should it go wrong.

Not too sure if they will be used for anything else but the computer based systems and image recognition certainly exist (and work very well) so it wouldn't be too difficult to implement a very long SPECS type system using this array of cameras - simple answer don't speed on this stretch of road, and when it goes live use the signs for lane open/ closed information.

I received this as well as the top posters part of the post (does that make sense??)

There are, in fact, only 12 out of the numerous gantries on the variable
speed controlled section of the M42 that actually carry speed cameras. On
each of these 12 gantries there is a digital infra red speed camera above
each lane (including the hard shoulder) on both sides of the carriageway,
making 8 cameras on each 'live' gantry. There are no gantries that only have speed cameras in one direction so you can tell which have them by looking at the back of the gantry on the opposite carriageway for the four grey boxes with two apertures on the front of them. All other cameras are CCTV and traffic flow cameras. The speed camera equipped gantries are mainly grouped around the start and finish of the controlled section and around the A41 and A34 junctions.
